Dan Mazur Ama Dablam Expedition: Dispatch 27 |
 |
 |
|
Dispatch 27:
It is with great sadness and
condolences to the family, friends and colleagues
of Robert Rackl that we send you this photo of his
memorial marker in basecamp. The photo was taken
by Kirsti Samson and scanned by Murari Sharma, and
resized by Deha Shrestha of Parivar Trekking.
Robert fell on 11 October, from approximately 5850
meters, clipped to an old rope while descending.
It was a horrible, shocking, and tragic death for
all of us in basecamp and on the mountain. He was
the leader of Ralf Dujmovits' Amical Expedition.
We understand that Robert's body remains at the
small lake at the base of the south face, inside a
rock cairn. After Robert fell, we replaced the
entire rope on the whole route from camp 1 to the
summit. |

Several teams contributed rope,
including the DAV-Summit Team, under Mathias, the
New England Team under Scott, the Mexican-Spanish
Team under Hector, and the AAI-Guides team, under
Todd and Winslow. We thank them very much for
their wholehearted contribution. Our own members
and 8 expert Sherpas newly fixed more than 1750
meters of our own best-quality new 8 and 9.5 mm
kernmantle and other types of rope. It became our
urgent goal to prevent any further tragedy by
making the route safe for our own members and
staff, as well as everyone on the mountain, no
matter if they helped out, and even if they
declined to contribute!!! All the teams, members,
and Sherpas need to work together on Ama Dablam to
maximize safety and enjoyment, and to minimize
such tragedy. Thanks very much for your kind
assistance, Yours Sincerely, from Daniel Mazur and
all of us at SummitClimb.com
