Route
Itinerary
Manaslu, at 8163 meters, is the eighth highest peak in the world. It is located in the west-central part of Nepal, and our team will climb it by the original route. We will be climbing during the "spring" or " pre-monsoon" season, when the hazards of weather and snow and avalanche are traditionally at their lowest. Dan Mazur

Jeff Justman will be co-leading this expedition, his reports are here.

Dispatch Five: Dear EverestNews.com, this is Wil Seelye, we just returned to basecamp from Camp 2 with Jeff, Bruce, and Arnold. We've been at 22,000 ft for the past few days and because of foul weather we could not fix line or scout the route to Camp 3. A storm moved into the area and during a break we made the decision to decend to Basecamp. The decent started fine but soon turned into an epic adventure to get into Camp 1. The snow increased which made down climbing/rappelling difficult. During the last steep section we were hit by a number of small avalanches, however, one significant slide took Jeff for the ride of his life. Jeff kept his wits, regrouped, pulled himself from the slide and we discussed how to cross the ice field. Bruce belayed Jeff, while Arnold belayed me. Conditions were white out and all but one wand remained in the ice field. With Jeff in the lead he nailed the first wand on the other side of the ice field, our footprints were covered in snow in less that a minute. The terrain now became easy to Camp 1 and we all breathed a sigh of relief, until Jeff noticed a fracture line in the snow above us. We increased our distances and belayed each other through the danger zone. Just prior to Camp 1, Shane and the Sherpas came looking for us, we all made into Camp 1 along with a group of the Dutch climbers. Jeff, Bruce, Arnold and I decided to stay in Camp 1 for the night, it was now 4pm. Shane and the Sherpas descended to Basecamp, and arrived by 6pm. Since we had no sleeping bags (cached at camp 2) we put on our down clothing and jammed into one tent. We were plenty warm during the night and descended to Basecamp by 9am. Still storming today, I hope the weather breaks soon so we can make another attempt on the summit. Bye for now, Wil.

Thanks for letting us tell our story on your excellent website!

Thank you EverestNews.com, for providing this service to Dutch, Belgian, South African, and all Flemish speaking climbers. From all of us at SummitClimb.com
