Manaslu 2003 featuring Dan Mazur
|
|
|
Manaslu, at 8163 meters, is the eighth highest
peak in the world. It is located in the
west-central part of Nepal, and our team will
climb it by the original route. We will be
climbing during the "spring" or " pre-monsoon"
season, when the hazards of weather and snow and
avalanche are traditionally at their lowest. Dan
Mazur Jeff
Justman will be co-leading this expedition, his
reports are here. |
Dispatch Six: Dear EverestNews.com, This is a dispatch
from Bruce Gierszal, Greetings to my family and
friends and their pets from Bruce Gierszal, Whooo
hoooo, live from base camp Manaslu!!! Read the
dispatches from Jeff, Will and Arnold, (if you can
read Dutch) about yesterdays EPIC descent from camp 2
to camp 1.
Ok,
here's some stats on Manaslu. I think I have to talk
about the mountain or they will not post this
"dispatch" Base camp - 16,000 feet. located right on
the side of the Manaslu GLACIER, "like the British
say". We have a great view up the mountain, and down
in the surrounding valley. The surrounding mountains
are amazing, some higher, some lower. There are now 4
teams on the mountain. "Us", Slovaks, Poles, and
Dutch. Everybody has there own rent free space along
side the glacier. It's so hot when the sun is out,
I've been spotted behind the mess tent taking a solar
shower, el buffo!!
camp
1 - 19,000 feet. now were are pretty much now at eye
level with the summits of many peaks. we can see into
Tibet...whoops, China. Looks the same, like looking
from Pennsylvania to Ohio??? Camp 1 is located up on
this tiny island of snow. right off to the side of the
icefall, (danger zone), watch out!!!! Of course we
have to find a route up just to get to camp 2. It's
nice camping above the clouds! We have a fun section
of steep climbing to get up to camp 1.
camp
2 - 22,000 feet. We run as fast as hell under a huge
icefall 100's of feet high, climb right up the middle
of the middle tongue of the glacier, cut to the right,
traverse left, go around some crevasses, then the
route broadens out and we slog up another 1,000 feet
and we arrive at camp 2, on top of the back side of a
huge crevasse. It's safe. Now we are way above the
clouds and most other peaks. 5 tents. the view is
unbelievable both day and night.
That's it for now! -bruce gierszal
