Pumori 2003 featuring Dan Mazur: Dispatch Two
|
Dispatch Two: There
were some comings and goings today within the Team.
Bruce Manning went for a tiger spotting trip to Royal
Chitwan National Park - one of the few remaining
places where these magnificent animals can be seen in
the wild. He should be back in Kathmandu tomorrow
night.
More arrivals with
Levi Borst from the USA, Ryan Waters from the USA,
Clive Westlake from the UK, and Ulrich Sure, Wolfgang
Schwemberger, Petra Hoffmeister, all from Germany.
They spent the afternoon looking around Thamel and
resting after long flights. We received an email from
Fred Muylaert in Namche. No reports on the weather or
snow conditions, but he did ask us to pick up an extra
sleeping bag for him. It seems we will run into some
seriously cold weather! Erich Bonfert showed up on
schedule tonight after his 5 day solo trek around the
Langtang area. He feels strong and is eager to get on
the trail.
Dan and Jay met with
the Ministry of Tourism late this afternoon to meet
our Liason Officer, and to sign the Climbing Permit.
This meeting, or "briefing", allows the Government
Officials to obtain information about the number of
local porters we will hire, the amount of disposables
(gas cartidges, etc) we will take with us and the type
and amount of equipment we will use. We also paid our
Garbage Deposit, which all expeditions are required to
pay. The amount is quite substantial, and because of
this, expeditions have a very good reason to bring all
rubbish back to Kathmandu. The Ministry people were
friendly as always, and the procedure was completed
with minimum hassle.
Later that night, Dan
and Jay, along with Jeff and Shane, (the Manaslu
Expedition Leaders), bundled into taxis and headed off
to the suburbs of Kathmandu to have dinner with our
Sirdar, (Head Sherpa) Kaji. We met his lovely wife,
and three beautiful children, and were treated to
Sherpa hospitality at it's best! Course after course
of wonderful food was served - just when we thought it
was all over, another course would come out. All of us
had trouble walking back to the taxis at the end of
the night - speaking of which - while we were being
entertained, the taxi drivers were being plied full of
chang (rice beer). Needless to say it was an
interesting trip back to the Hotel Nepa! Once there,
one of the taxi drivers forgot that he'd already been
paid and kept calling Dan's room until 3am!
More news tomorrow,
Jay Reilly
Thank You from all of
us on the
SummitClimb 2003 Pumori Expedition.
