Pumori 2003 featuring Dan Mazur: Dispatch Four

Dispatch Four: Welcome to the first official day of our Expedition! Everybody is feeling fit and healthy. Today was a big one on the roof of the Hotel Nepa. Dan, Jay, Jeff and Shane (Manaslu Expedition Leaders) spent the day going through all of the logistics of the trip. We had a huge equipment briefing to ensure all members have the proper gear for going up high. This was a great opportunity for people to ask questions and get their systems on track. Jeff (Manaslu Leader), went through the climbing gear, while Jay demonstrated brilliant technique for fixed line climbing.

We then took a lot of time going through the medical kits, that Jay and Shane had been working on for the last two days. Everybody was impressed at the range of health problems we are able to treat in the field. Dan then demonstrated the use of our oxygen equipment and the "Gammow" bag (a portable decompression chamber used for severe altitude sickness). Jay was the "crash test dummy" and was taken from an altitude of 1300m down to 70m below sea level.

Shane (Manaslu Leader), then produced a bag of high altitude food and a stove, at which time Dan proceeded to concoct a evil mixture of noodles, tuna, yak cheese and garlic. Hmmm....maybe we'll leave the cooking to the cooks!

We have an early start tomorrow - up at 4.00am for a 5.00am departure, so there'll be plenty of packing going on tonight. More news tomorrow.

Thank you from all of us on Pumori 2003, Jay Reilly

Thank You from all of us on the SummitClimb 2003 Pumori Expedition.
