Dispatch Five: Sorry we've missed a day, our schedule has been hectic, but I'll fill you in on the last two days' events starting from our 5am departure from the Nepa Hotel in Kathmandu. There was some initial pandemonium, as both the Pumori and Manaslu Expeditions scurried around frantically, loading buses with duffle bags and equipment. Amazingly, all member bags made it to the domestic terminal and Lukla with no damage or losses! This was mostly due to explicit instructions given by Dan for the members to watch their bags every step of the way.

The flight to Lukla was gorgeous, with stunning views of the Himalayas from the left side of the De-havilland Twin Otter. After a great lunch, and an entertaining show of the porters loading the zoes (a sturdy cross breed of a yak and a cow - with a better temperament), we set off on the trail to Phakding, about 2 hrs away. The number of trekkers is low at this time of year, so for the most part we had the trail and the stunning views of snow capped peaks and the Dud Kosi River to ourselves.

After a great night of good food and lots of laughs at the Sun Rise Garden Lodge, we set off for Namche Bazar at 3400m. Most of the members left early to get ahead of our 20 strong zoe train. The climb is steep and long, and the animals are slow. Once again, we had the whole trail to ourselves and the climb to Namche was very relaxing and beautiful, with the rhododendron just starting to bloom. The team met at the Everest Bakery and Pizza Hut, and enjoyed the best pizza in the world at this altitude! The whole team is feeling fit and strong - Levi even went for a walk to the Shangbouche airstrip - 300m higher than Namche.

Tomorrow is a rest day. A good chance to explore Namche and do some shopping and enjoy some of the great bakeries. A message from Deno - Mina wa genki de gambatte iru - things are fine, happy and well.

From Uli and Wolfi -

Hallo an alle Zu-Hause-Gebliebenen. Soviel fuer heute - Fortsetzung folgt ... Tschuess und Pfiad eich Uli & Wolfi

Thank you from all of us on Pumori 2003, Jay Reilly
