Dispatch
Six:
March 21st, 2003: We have now arrived in Periche -
4200m. The team is doing well, Wolfie has shaken
his cold, Deano has acclimated after an
uncomfortable night in Pangbouche. Levi is feeling
extremely strong and has gone all the way to
Lobouche - 4900m! |
March
19 was our rest day in Namche Bazar (means place
shaded by trees). Everyone took advantage of the fine
foods offered from the three main bakeries. Pizza,
chocolate danish, apple pie and fresh brewed coffee
was the order of the day for the most part. Dan and
Jay both ate two pizzas and could hardly look at
dinner that night! The team was also followed around
by a dog, that lives in Namche. Wherever we would go,
the dog would follow. He especially liked Koenrad. He
even followed us back to the Panorama Lodge. This was
all very cute until he decided to warn all the other
dogs away from "his" turf......at 2am!
March
20, was a big day in terms of mileage. We walked from
Namche to Pangbouche, with a lovely lunch stop at the
Gompa Lodge in Thangbouche. Some trivia - Thangbouche
is home to a large and famous monastery. It is said
that even five minutes of listening to the Monks
chantings will bring great fortune. We stayed at the
Paradise Lodge in Pangbouche, where our Sherpas, under
the supervision of Dan, busied themselves sorting
through equipment and tents stored there from our Ama
Dablam expedition in 2002.
This
morning en route to Periche, most of the team went
with Jangbu Sherpa to the Lama's house in Pangbouche
to have a Puja(prayer) ceremony. The Lama chanted,
threw rice, blessed our prayer flags which the Sherpas
will string in Basecamp and blessed all of us. We
drank yak butter tea and each recieved Kata (a silk
scarf with prayer incantations on it. Said to bring
the reciever good luck). It was most tranquil.
Now
we are resting in Periche for the afternoon. We'll be
in touch again soon.
March
22-25: Everyone is fine. On the 22 we walked to
Lobuche, and on the 23 we walked to basecamp at the
lake just under Pumori at 5300 metres. Our Yak drivers
were great about getting us here. Petra, our basecamp
trekker, left with Maya Sherpa on the 24th, and on the
same day, everyone practiced how to climb and descend
fixed lines and how to use the radios. Jangbu Sherpa
and Dan walked to ABC and then on to where we will
begin fixing lines. Beatiful mornings, great views of
Everest, snowing this afternoon.
Thank
you from Jay Reilly and the entire Pumori 2003 Team.
Notes
from other team members are below.

Hallo,
Hier
uitstekende maaltijd. Meer nieuws over enkele dagen.
Groetjes, Fred
From
Uli and Wolfi
Wir
sind alle gut im BC angekommen. Petra hat uns gestern
wieder Richtung Zivilisation verlassen. Heute nacht
hat es hier unten gut 20 cm geschneit. Gleich geht es
endlich los - hinauf ins vorgeschobene BC (ABC).
Unsere Hochtraeger sind bereits unterwegs und leisten
eine fast unmenschliche Arbeit. Auch unsere Rucksaecke
sind schon gepackt. Das Abenteuer kann beginnen. Wolfi
ist dank unserer reichhaltigen Apotheke wieder auf der
Hoehe. Uli hat es bis jetzt ohne Drogen geschafft. Bis
zum naechsten Mal ...

Hi
folks, sorry I haven't been in touch for a while we
are now at base camp, arrived the day before yesterday
and got everything set up. Had a big snow storm
yesterday which lasted 12 hours, couldn't do anything
but sit in the tents and read books etc. Base camp is
at 5300m today we go to 5600 to the next camp to drop
off stuff, and then will come back down here to sleep.
