Andy Politz Bio: I find myself, at 44 years, feeling very lucky to have known
the people I do/have and seen the places and cultures I’ve encountered.

I was a mountain guide at Mt. Rainier for 12 years. I have
been fortunate to have been able to travel to many beautiful places to climb:
Alaska (Denali and St. Elias), the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Pakistan
(K2), Nepal (Hiunchuli and Everest), the Ecuadorian volcanoes and a bit around
the states. When the beauty of the mountains grew routine, I spent two winters
away in a sea kayak (Baja and Canada’s Inside Passage).
Taking part in the Mallory and Irvine Research Expeditions
of 1999 and 2001, has been a turning point in my life. After spending an
afternoon with George Mallory, I gained an insight into the make-up of a
legend. What the traditional efforts of the early British accomplished are a
strong message for us today. What they lacked in today’s gear, knowledge and
skills, they made up for in the Human Spirit- in buckets.
I have told the story a couple of hundred
times to local schools, each time trying to express the value the story has
for today’s technological society. The Linworth Alternative Program, of
Worthington High School has allowed me to run monthly outdoor programs for
over ten years now. Spending times in the schools has been valuable for me, to
observe the strengths in our developing future leaders.
