Jean-Christophe Lafaille: Annapurna 2002

Here I am at Annapurna's Base Camp. It is odd to send news from here today. 

I arrived to Katmandu last May 10th at 14.00, I managed to catch the last local plane Kathmandu-Pokhara at 15.00. Once in Pokhara (30 minutes flight), a Nepalese guide was waiting for me with a taxi. We went over 50 km through little roads and the typical Nepalese driving... then we reached Naya Pul, where the trek begins.

We walked for 30 minutes with rain until Birethanti before stopping for the night in a lodge. On May 11th in the morning, I started the trekking in an amazing very good shape, it took to me only two days to reach Base camp, when normally it takes 4 days and a half and walking fast. I felt magnetized by the environment, as well as I felt that  Jean Christophe needed to know that I was getting more and more close to him, even if he has left three days ago in order to attempt the summit... What a pleasure for him and for me when we have talked over the radio... He was very happy to know that I was there, not so far from him... He has thus left, as forecasted, Base Camp last May 11th in order to reach Camp 1, climb to Camp 2 on May 12th, and to Camp 3 on May 13th... Today, May 14th, he has started the Great East ridge... Weather forecast is good above 7000 m, under we are surrounded by clouds with little rain, but nothing relevant. To get to the ridge, the conditions were really dangerous, but now snow conditions are all right, as he considered : hard snow. He is in a team with a Spanish Basque climber who is in a very good shape, the other Spanish member who should climb to the summit is coming back this afternoon, as he feels bad and cannot get through this ridge... Ed Viesturs and Veikka are probably coming back, also, to Base Camp tomorrow as they are going very slow ; the decrease of the wind is not going to last very long and from Friday May 17th it is forecasted that this wind will increase gradually.

Jean Christophe plans to do a bivouac at 8000 m tomorrow night under the central summit, just before the last technical passage. He should reach the Annapurna's summit Thursday May 16th in the morning...

I am very moved, I have the Annapurna's south face just in front of me, I am writing this dispatch but there is also the woman who tries to manage with its feelings as well as she cans... this is not easy... I cross my fingers wishing he will reach this dammed summit... I am with him during this hard times, we can speak twice a day, GOOD LUCK...

P.S.: As for the next plans, he wanted to climb the Dhaulagiri but the weather forecast and the monsoon won't allow Jean Christophe to realize this project.

Bonjour EverestNews.com, Me voila au camp de base de l'ANNAPURNA... Bizarre de vous donner des nouvelles d'ici aujourd`hui.. Je suis arrivee a Katmandu le 10 mai a 14h00, j'ai pu prendre le dernier avion local Kathmandu - Pokhara de la journee juste juste a 15h00, a Pokhara apres env.30 minutes de vol, mon porteur et un guide Nepalais m'attendaient avec un taxi. Nous avons ensuite parcouru 50 km sur des petites routes avec la conduite a la Nepalaise... afin d'arriver a Naya Pul, la ou commencele trek. Nous avons marches env.30 minutes sous la pluie jusqu'a Birethanti avant de s'arreter pour la nuit, enfin, dans un lodge... bonne journee... Le 11 au matin, j'attaque le trekking avec une forme physique incroyable... j'ai mis deux jours pour arriver au camp de base alors qu'il faut, en marcher bien, 4 jours et demi... un truc bizarre, j'etais comme magnetisee par les lieux... je sentais le besoin egalememt de Jean-Christophe de savoir que je me rapproche de lui... meme si il etait deja parti depuis trois jours pour tenter le sommet... quel bonheur pour lui et pour moi lorsque a mon arrivee nous avons pu nous parler en radio...il etait tellement heureux que je sois la pas loin de lui pour le reconforter, l'encourager, etre sa confidente... Il a donc comme prevu quitter le camp de base pour le sommet le 11 mai afin de monter au camp 1, le 12 il monte au camp 2, le 13 il atteint le camp 3... aujourd'hui le 14 mai il a attaque la grande et longue arete Est... La meteo est bonne au dessus de 7000 metres au dessous nous sommes dans des nuages avec un peu de pluie par momemt mais rien de mechant. Pour rejoindre l'arete les conditions etaient tres dangereuses mais maintenant les conditions de neige sont bonnes, elles sont comme il l'avait envisage... neige dure. Il fait equipe avec un des basques qui a bien la forme, l'autre basque qui devait monter pour le sommet est redescendu cet apres midi au camp de base car il n'etait pas bien dans sa tete pour se lancer sur cette grande arrete... Ed viesturs et Veikka  vont probablememt redescendre au camp de base demain car ils sont trop lents, le creneau sans vent ne va pas durer longtemps et a partir de vendredi 17 mai le vent va forcir progressivement,Jean-Christophe pense faire un bivouac a 8000m demain soir sous le sommet central juste avant le dernier passage technique de la voie... il doit fouler le sommet de l'ANNAPURNA normalememt le jeudi 16 mai au matin... je suis tres emue, j'ai la face sud de l'Annapurna devant moi, je redige mon communique mais il y a aussi la femme qui essaye de gerer au mieux ses emotions... pas facile... je croise tres fort les doigts pour qu'il atteigne ce maudit sommet... je l'accompagne dans ces momemts si forts, nous pouvons nous parler deux fois par jour...je suis en direct avec lui...BONNE CHANCE ....

PS:Pour la suite, il voulait gravir le Dhaulagiri mais les previsions meteo et l'avance de la saison sur la mousson ne permettera pas a Jean-Christophe de realiser ce projet
