The Company: Alpine Ascents International

A Message from Gordon Janow, Alpine Ascents Program Director:

It is with tremendous excitement that we enter our fourteenth year of operation. We continue to devote much time to keeping a commitment to ourselves and fellow climbers by seeking out and utilizing the finest guiding talent in the country. We strive to be the best at what we do, because we love doing it.

For years, Alpine Ascents was known as ‘the Everest company’, today we are known as the leading mountaineering authority from South America to Kilimanjaro and from Greenland to our celebrated school. For the new millennium, we look only to do more of the same; provide the highest quality expeditions on both classic ascents and in new areas. Being on the forefront is not just about doing something well, it is understanding that excellence means something different in every location.

Our past season was marked by outstanding growth and we look toward the new millennium to expand into more locations. Our most exciting announcement is the opening of the Alaska Mountaineering School, the perfect training ground for aspiring climbers. On the international front, Todd, Gordon and Dawn have recently explored exotic locations in Iran, Yemen, Mongolia, the North Pole as well as trekking regions in Nepal. Using the same logic and reconnaissance methods that launched our existing programs, we are confident these new programs will soon become favorites. We sincerely thank you for partnering with us on these world-class adventures.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY: Our simple mission statement has not changed: by utilizing the best climbing talent in the US, we offer the opportunity for climbers at all levels to achieve personal goals through challenging, safe and enjoyable expeditions.

Our climbing and training techniques were originally put to the test in the most rigorous fashion possible, on the glaciers of Mt. Everest. It is on Mt. Everest that our success and reputation began. Today, Alpine Ascents leads expeditions to over twenty-five peaks around the world.

SAFETY RECORD: Our safety record stands as the finest in the guiding industry. When making decisions or organizing climbs, avoiding injury and sickness is our primary focus. By establishing a prevention program for each expedition we ensure your climb is as safe as possible. We encourage you to ask about our safety record on each trip.

ABOUT OUR CLIMBS & MOUNTAINEERING SCHOOL: Our reputation began in the and quickly spread to great mountains around the globe. Today, our guides are recognized as leaders in the international climbing world and act as a resource for climbers, publishers and media organizations. The Alpine Ascents Mountaineering School is considered one of the premier climbing schools in America and we are ecstatic about the advent of our new Alaska programs.

All Alpine Ascents expeditions are carefully selected. This not only means taking the time to investigate quality climbs, but includes selecting an optimum route, ensuring top quality provisions and developing a safety program for each journey. Before departing on any expedition we provide climbers with a wealth of pre-trip information and guides are available to answer questions. Unlike many organizations, we lead and plan our own climbs. The majority of our climbers come from personal recommendations and are repeat clients.

Leading cohesive groups is fundamental to our philosophy. Before any member joins our team, we require background information on conditioning and a climbing/hiking biography. This ensures each climber can be a safe team member and allows our guides to galvanize the most effective groups.

NEW TREKS: The interest in having Alpine Ascents’ guides lead treks to mountain regions has been overwhelming. Focusing on our background as alpine experts, we have added a number of spectacular mountain journeys, which offer the trekker a keen look at some of our favorite regions. The philosophy is to have mountain and cultural experts lead trips, presenting both an historic perspective as well as a true sense of why these regions are so admired by mountaineers. Each trek is designed for those without climbing experience but who are in good physical condition and have a true love for mountain environs. Please look for our new treks in the Himalayas, Mongolia, Yemen and Peru. We are always happy to put you in touch with former climbers and trekkers.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AND IMPACT: Alpine Ascents is deeply committed to maintaining eco-systems at home and around the world. With each expedition, we not only attempt to leave the environment as we found it, but strive to assist the local population in protecting the land and people indigenous to that region. Each staff member is sincerely committed to environmentally sound alpine ascents.

Over the past years, with the assistance of our Sherpa teams, we have stepped up efforts to clean Mt. Everest. (We helped remove over 500 oxygen bottles and 3000kg’s of debris from base camp and above). We have also turned our efforts homeward and worked to continue implementation of on-going maintenance and minimal impact plans in the North Cascades. We take Leave No Trace practices very seriously, and encourage all who climb with us to understand proper wilderness principles. We look forward to expanding environmental efforts around the world.

CLIMBING AS EXPLORATION: Climbers are indeed modern day explorers with particular dreams and visions. We look to this brochure to carry the rhythm of exploration by highlighting not only our climbs, treks and courses, but the overall experience of these journeys. Whether attending our mountaineering school, trekking in the Himalayas or attempting an 8000m peak, we treat each expedition as a unique exploration. We realize that every team member is an adventurer in their own right, and joins us to embrace a challenge and learn through experience. We encourage you to contact us for specific brochures to gather additional information about each expedition.
