Ama Dablam Autumn 2002

Dan Mazur and his Autumn 2002 Ama Dablam

10/7/02: Today we made the trek up from Deboche to base camp. After a short walk along the main trail up the valley we broke up right away from the line of villages. We quickly climbed above tree line and had a brisk windy walk over some beautiful open country. We had brief views of the south face of Lhotse, the biggest wall in the world, before the clouds moved in. Base camp is located on a large flat area next to a river and nestled against the slopes of Ama Dablam, with plenty of room to spread out. We were happy to find Rex and the advance team had been hard at work setting up a comfortable camp. Sadly the camp is open to the west, which is the direction the cold wind was blowing from!

Dan Mazur
Autumn Everest 2002
We were a bit surprised to find not many people from other expeditions here in base camp, the mountain has been pretty quiet until our arrival. Apparently none of the others have made it up yet, due to poor health or poor snow conditions. We are hoping that as the weather cools in October the snow will improve.

Base camp was quite busy as we unloaded dozens of yak loads and set up tent after tent (one tent for each member). Fortunately most people seem to be acclimatizing reasonably well and no new illnesses appeared.

Unfortunately the clouds started pouring some freezing rain in the evening. We took little note due to a delicious dinner including spiced yak meat, until it was time to head back to the tents...

The photos from this expedition will be stock photos from Dan's previous expeditions.
