Ama Dablam Autumn 2002

Dan Mazur and his Autumn 2002 Ama Dablam

10/11/2002: The weather was beautiful and sunny today.

The group are now traveling between base camp and advanced base camp at regular intervals shifting heavy loads of personal gear including climbing equipment, food, warm clothing and sleeping systems. Advanced base camp is situated just next to the main summit pyramid (3 camps from the summit). Rex and two of the porters have been working very hard to establish 16 tent sites in addition to a kitchen area. Rex has also managed to practically put the kitchen tent on the only running stream on that side of the mountain.

Dan Mazur
Autumn Everest 2002
So as far as advanced base camp (approximately - 5400m or 17500ft for the old timers and Americans) is concerned, we have given ourselves every opportunity and advantage of summit success. Most people seem to be suffering from colds at the moment and shares in amoxicillin are booming, so buy now for a fast return. The weather the last few days have been really unstable. We have had two minor snowfalls laying a couple of inches each time. Generally this has cleared up by evening at base camp although it has stayed on the ground about 400m above base camp. This hasn't caused to many problems although Ian, Andy and Jon tried to reach camp one yesterday and reported lots of snow between advanced base camp and camp one. This made the scrambling quite difficult. A large group of team members will be setting off for ABC tomorrow with a view to gain camp one elevation on the 12th. The plan will then be to try to establish a camp of sorts at camp one elevation, on Sat 12th 3 porters the lead climbing Sherpa and the sidar plus John Andy and Ian will leave for ABC remove some of the tents and then the next day climb up, pitch them to make camp one. Hopefully there have been no other snowfalls so hopefully they will achieve camp one without to many problems. That’s all for now.

Sincerely from all of us on the Ama Dablam expedition.

PS Wendy says hi to her mum and dad.

Best Regards From All Of US on the Ama Dablam Expedition from www.summitclimb.com
