Autumn Everest 2001: The American-Canadian Expedition

Dispatch 15: We Send Our Thoughts and Prayers

Advanced Basecamp East Rongbuk Glacier September 12, 2001

About 12 to 14 hours ago we learned about the horrible terrorist attack that has taken place back home. All of us here are still in a state of almost complete disbelief that this has happened. It saddens all of the joy and anticipation for success of this expedition.

I am particularly saddened to learn that several of my coworkers at American Airlines lost their lives in this senseless act of pure evil.

After a lot of discussion among the team, we have decided at this point to continue the climb. The last word that we had was that the U.S. borders were closed as far as travel in and out.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many people back home who are affected by this tragedy. We will be back with an update in a couple of days, once our thoughts are back with the climb.

We are currently at advance basecamp at 21,000 feet, and we’re just going to rest a couple of days to get our thoughts organized. Goodbye for now.
