Austria Horizont Reisen Everest 2001 Expedition

14 April - 2 June 2001(50 days)

Organizer: Horizont Reisen/Club Montana Tirol, A-6020 INNSBRUCK Amraserstr. 110a

Leader: Stefan Gatt, A-4040 LINZ, Herzog Wilhelmweg 3 / 4

The expedition will  consist of two separate phases, the first part will allow us time to acclimatize to the rarefied air in order to accomplish phase two of our expedition which is to climb Everest in an alpine, individual if you will, style. parts. First we will fly from Mόnchen to Lhasa. Here we will do some sightseeing before we move north to the Nyanchhen-Thanglha mountain massif, which is part of the Trans-Himalaya. This is a rarely visited part of Himalaya with many 5 and 6,000 meter summits, along with four 7,000 meter summits. Many of these are still unclimbed to this day. Our base camp will be established at the westside of the massif, and we are planning to climb two of the six-thousanders, and the central summit of Nyanchhen-Thanglha (7,117m). We will stay in this region for 24 days, climbing and acclimatizing for our Everest-climb.

From Nyanchhen-Thanglha we will travel through Shigatse and Shegar on to Rongbuk. Here the second part of the expedition starts. At Rongbuk we will establish Basecamp and follow in the tracks of the English pioneers, climbing the north- and later the north-east ridge to the summit. In Basecamp we will have a Nepalese cook and a kitchen-boy to prepare our food. There will also be an expedition-doctor present for safety. The necessary tents, food and communication equipment will be supplied. The climb in itself will be conducted in an individual style, there will be no Sherpa-support and supplemental  oxygen. Each member of the expedition will be responsible for his/her own choice of route on the mountain and carrying his/her own supplies up the mountain and stocking and building the higher camps. There will be no guides, and it is expected that the members be self-reliant and experienced mountaineers (up to UIAA Grade V).

We will have 2 weeks from the end of may to complete our climb. With our prior acclimatisation we will hopefully ascend fast and if the weather permits it, summit before the monsoon hits in the middle of June.
