The Andy Politz Q&A with Questions from the readers of EverestNews.com

Question: In one of the dispatches this year there was a comment that the team was looking for evidence of Irvine's struggle to get back to Camp, implying that he survived Mallory. What is the basis for this view and was there any such evidence?

Andy: Amongst the team, you’ll get different answers from each. In the Chinese description of the sighting in 1975, there is no mention of a posture induced by a fall. I find it had to believe the fall and injuries sustained would not have been mentioned had Wong hong Bao(?) come upon Mallory. Mallory’s posture is too vivid to not assume the position he is in, in describing the scene. As Hasagawa (?) tells the story, he indicated sleeping, without using words. It would be a stretch to portray Mallory with two hands, palms together, placed beside your head.

Question: Were there any oxygen cylinders at the '24 Camp VI?

Andy: No.

Question: How thoroughly were you able to excavate it?

Andy: We did not excavate. I gave up hand excavating after I hand dug my waterline to the house. It’s too hard.

We did sweep through with a professional grade Metrotech metal locator. I am confident we found all the metal there.
