The Andy Politz Q&A with Questions from the readers of EverestNews.com

Question: If there conclusively were no oxygen cylinders, does this say anything about the number of cylinders M&I carried with them?

Andy: I think the only ‘conclusive’ comment would be to develop the film in the camera and even then, it may be of no help. We found some oxygen hose. Something with as much surface area as an O2 bottle could have easily stuffed down the hill in the ensuing 75+ years.

Question: There apparently was a report that Mallory had moved Camp VI before the summit attempt. This year it was located lower than expected. Is there any evidence that Mallory may have established a higher camp than the one found?

Andy: How do stories get started? There is probably a grain of truth to it. He would have had to bring extra tent poles, which he very well could have. Maybe he brought a new tent. The first guys up may not have stumbled on the best tent site. Subsequent efforts could have easily improved their lot.

Question: What is the current thought of the expedition members about the significance of the ice axe site.

Andy: The ice axe found in 1933 isn’t there. It could have slid off, or maybe it was carried off in 1933.
