Everest
2001 "Anything is Possible":
Dispatches are below !
|
| Disabled
mountaineer Gary
Guller will attempt to summit Mt. Everest,
the highest mountain in the world at 8,850m,
in Spring 2001. While any attempt at Everest
is one of the greatest challenges one could
undertake, Gary's attempt will be especially
personal. In 1986, Gary suffered a spinal cord
injury in a climbing accident. His neck was
broken and the nerve roots going to his left
arm were pulled out of the spinal cord.
Despite experimental surgery, the paralysis
was irreparable and he made the decision to
have his left arm amputated. |

GG [Gary
Guller] here
writing today. Mike, our fearless leader,
suggested that Kipa, Gumbu and I leave early
from C2 to EBC. Kipa and myself had a
particularly difficult night at C2, coughing and
being just plain uncomfortable, a sure sign of
too many nights at higher altitude. We finally
got away at around 9:30 am. It was very, very
hot most of our entire way down the western Cwm
and the Icefall, dehydrating us all, me the
most, as we descended. Gombu and I darted off a
little ahead of Kipa, making it to C1 in just
over an hour. The ladders between the two camps
were in good shape, but again, just a big old
mind game crossing the bloody things.

A
short break at our only tent now at C1 before
all agreed that we better move quickly through
the Icefall before the heat not only cooks us,
but increases the chances of the huge seracs
moving, shifting and tumbling down due to the
heat of the day. A few ladders have changed in
the Icefall. Descending the near vertical
ladders is my worst; I just do not like it at
all. My confidence is definitely in the right
place, but the sheer awkwardness of turning
around, clipping in, making sure my crampons hit
the rungs, my right arm already tired from the
last ladder... But do we just love it? Oh
yeah!!!!

From Mike: We awoke to the news this morning
that the legendary Sherpa, Babu,
had died last evening after falling into a
crevasse near Camp 2. He disappeared at 4 pm and
his body was found at midnight. Climbers do not
have a death wish. We climb to seek what life
has to offer, but sometimes the boundaries are
crossed. Babu's death affected us all. Babu was
brought down today accompanied by some 4
Sherpas. Gary and I went to the tent where his
body was laid to pay our respects. We laid
Buddhist scarves on his upper body and lit a
candle. Kipa and Gombu joined others in an all
night vigil. |

Mike's birthday! Before we started to relax and
enjoy a drink or two, Mike, Gary and Janis,
walked over to the helicopter site to bid Babu
farewell. He will be taken to lie "in
state" at Bodinath, the Buddhist centre in
Kathmandu. His body will then be taken around
the capital, before cremation at the Hanuman
Dhokha (the Monkey Temple).
