Everest is already beginning
to take its toll.
Juan
Oiarzabal, "To
the Edge of The Impossible"
or AL FILO DE LO IMPOSIBLE Expedition
to recreate the ascent of 1924 of Mallory and Irvine of
Everest.
Juan and
the climbers are around 4000 meters and moving up to EBC on the North. Other
climbers are with them.
Graham
Hoyland and his expedition (Russell Brice) are a few days behind. The BBC has
told us that Graham's updates will come a few at a time and not every day. We
will let YOU know when updates occur!
- Everest Spring 2000: Byron
Smith
Current Status: Lots of news today from
Basecamp. One of the
climbers, Brad, has decided this is not the right year for him to attempt an
assault on the summit.
Brad has taken some spectacular photos of the mountain and has made a
significant contribution to the expedition. Often climbers reach Basecamp and
realize they are not in prime condition to continue the daunting task of taking
on Everest. There is no doubt Brad will return to the mountain another day.
John and Ann have also left
Basecamp. John has been
in charge of communications and has done an extraordinary job of getting
information from this isolated area back to us. Ann has been looking after
the education program. When you have your feet firmly planted at low
altitude it's tough to realize how hard it is to acclimatize to life at the base
of the world's highest mountain. John has had difficulty breathing and has
suffered altitude sickness for the past few weeks. He has decided he will be
better off at lower altitudes. Ann has decided to accompany her husband
home.
So what does this mean for the
climb? Byron remains confident. Two more Canadians, Dave and Jenny
Irvine-Halliday are expected to arrive within days to help out at Basecamp.
Byron, Tim and Virginia are all doing very well. More details over
the next few days.

are very good), and daily

- Canadian Everest Expedition 2000:
Current Status: One
of their climbers is having many problems with the high
altitude.

Canadians at the Canadian Everest Expedition 2000's official website -- http://www.canoe.ca/Everest/home.html
- Danish
Expedition: Thrane & Thrane
The
satellite communication company, Thrane & Thrane, is sponsoring the first
all Danish Mount Everest Expedition. The expedition named BigE Thrane
& Thrane Danish Everest Expedition 2000 - All eight members of the
BigE-expedition are among the most experienced Danish climbers with significant
mountaineering experience. Leader of the expedition and team doctor is Henrik
Jessen Hansen. Henrik Jessen Hansen has been on five earlier expeditions to
the Himalayas, including one to Mount Everest in 1996. This year was a
disastrous year, one with numerous casualties. As a result, Henrik
Jessen Hansen had to give up his personal attempt to reach the summit. Henrik Jessen Hansen established the world highest
emergency hospital,
where he performed important and needed rescue help.
Update:
On
Friday,
April 8th the climbers were one day from Base Camp. The climbers should
now be in BC. Look for another update soon.

Update
4/9/2000: The snow and wind have delayed our arrival to base camp by three days.
We need now to install the necessary equipment for
scaling the mountain. Some equipment we are waiting for hopefully will arrive tomorrow. We will
then need to perform the mandatory religious ceremonies necessary in all base
camps in the Himalayas. The altimeter that indicates that base camp is at 4180 meters
almost 4000 meters below our objective.
Update:
4/10/2000: Calm day today in Base camp. Joaquim Molins begins to write about the
adventure against a scenery we could have only imagined during our four years
that it took for us to get here! Now it is before our eyes. We hope to fulfill a
dream in the days ahead.
The
main goal of the team is to acclimatize to the altitude at the moment. The hours on foot
to get to this point were long and hard. The time is now to write, listen to music,
and contemplate the mountain and imagine the top. Different routes are always
intuited towards the top and each one tries to defend it technically. The truth
will be when one steps on top and then returns safely from its slopes.
