Brazilian Expedition to the Top of the
World: 59th day of the Brazilian Expedition to
the Top of the World. 9:30 Lhotse - 24:40 Brazil Lhotse's summit
8,501mThe altimeter
reads 8,563m, the official altitude is 8,501m and also accepted are
8,521m or 8,516m. But never mind. The important thing is that
today, October 5th, 2002, at 9;30h the Brazilian flag waved for the
first time on LHOTSE'S SUMMIT, commemorating the International Year
of the Mountains. The temperature here is 28 negative degrees
Celsius and we are almost freezing. Irivan and I are very happy.
VIVA O BRASIL!
10h00 - Base Camp 5,400m -
01:10 Brazil
We lose contact with our team
on the summit of Lhotse, the cold temperatures froze the radios that
Irivan and Waldemar were using to communicate with Base Camp. The
emotion that invaded the two climbers also was spread among all the
team at Base Camp. The feeling of victory is something
indescribable for our team, after almost 60 days doing a hard work,
now we are totally gratified.
We thank our families for their
support and understanding, we thank specially our sponsors: O
BOTICΑRIO, Volkswagen and Petrobrαs, without their partnership we
wouldn't be able to make the dream of the people of Brazil come
true.
We also thank the support given
by NERA, TISSOT, CHOCO BIS and CLUB SOCIAL.
We are waiting any moment for a
new contact with Waldemar Niclevicz and Irivan Gustavo Burda to
transmit our friends the emotion of this moment.
12h00 - Lhotse's Summit 8,501m
- 03h10 Brazil
We are beginning the descent
from Lhotse. We had unforgettable moments here on the summit
watching a landscape of infinite beauty. We could see Everest very
close and the mountain system of the Himalayas.
20h00 - Camp 4 (7,860m) - Camp
2 (6,500m)
What a beautiful day! You were
with us through On Line yesterday on the conquest of Lhotse which
happened today at 9h30 in the morning, Nepal time. After arriving
at 8,501m high, we started our long descent to Camp 4. The day was
really spectacular, a gift of God.
We paid attention to the
progress of the Japanese expedition on Everest. It's incredible,
they did not reach the summit for just a little! At the end of the
afternoon we could spot them on the South Summit at 8,751m high.
What a shame, probably nobody will climb Everest this autumn.
We dismounted our Camp 4 and
continued descending until we reached our Camp 2 exhausted, after a
total of 2,000m of descent. In spite of our exhaustion, we are very
satisfied with the climb of Lhotse.
Well, folks, now we are going
to rest because we are dying to sleep. We are going down to Base
Camp tomorrow and we'll tell you details of the climb and we'll show
you the beautiful pictures of the final attack.
