Brazilian Expedition to the Top of the World. Deboche (3,770m) - Periche (4,280m) Visit to Pangboche Monastery.

Yesterday I sent a picture taken in front of Tengboche Monastery, the biggest monastery in all Khumbu, that after being totally destroyed by a fire in 1992, was rebuilt and every year after is expanded. Its chorten, originally made of stucco, is being covered by cement. A big portal is almost in front of the main entrance.

I was for the first time in Khumbu in 1991. This is my fourth visit to this Nepalese region of Everest. That is why I could note some changes as these eleven years went by, the number of lodges is more than double, the road has a lot of erosions in many parts and piles of garbage can be seen between the trees in the woods by trained eyes. I also noted that deforestation seems to be less and that the infrastructure for tourism has evolved a lot, as well as the prices.

What really did not change was the strong presence of religion. Chortens (a kind of Tibetan stupa), mani korlos (praying cylinders or windmills), manis (walls made with stone layers craved with prayers), tcheudos (piles of stones craved with prayers), are multiplied everywhere, keeping in an untouchable way the authenticity of the Sherpas culture.

This kind of analysis is very important on this International Mountain Year. Not only the environment, but cultural and ethnical matters that surround them, deserve to be preserved. It is worth a reflection of what is happening in Brazil and what measures can be taken in order to give value and respect to our mountains.

Today, on our way to Pheriche, we entered the most ancient monastery of the region, in Pangboche. We looked for the monastery abbot, we asked for his blessing and protection for our climb. The ceremony lasted about an hour and left us with a high spirit. Our enthusiasm to face Everest and Lhotse has never been stronger.

Namaste!
