08/23/2002 16th day
of the Brazilian Expedition to the Top of the World.
Gorak - Shep ( 5,200m ) The first sight of Everest.
This morning everything was white, a
blanket of snow of 20 cm extended all around our
lodges. We decided to stay in Gorak-Shep one more
night, because it would be risky to go up to Base Camp
with all this snow hiding bumps in the road, specially
for our yaks (we are with 12 of them). We try not to
lose time and we used the day to improve our
acclimatization. We climbed Kala-Pattar, 5,600m, the
weather got better and we had a fantastic view of
Everest, surrounded with clouds every moment.
Irivan, Marcelo, Mute, Paulo and me
stayed on top of Kala-Pattar contemplating the top
pyramid of Everest, until the clouds covered that
beautiful vision completely, until it started to
snow. The weather is really showing signs of
improving and tomorrow we hope to be able to go to
Base Camp.
Namaste!
