 Broad Peak 8047meters/26,402ft: Summer 2000

Broad Peak is one of the 8000 meters peaks which towers above the Concordia at the heart of the Karakoram range. It lies on the Pakistan/China frontier between K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks and was first climbed by four Austrians in 1957, including Kurt Diemberger and Herman Buhl.

This year several expeditions are on Broad peak including the Jagged Globe Expedition, whom EverestNews.com will receive some reports from.

First Update: The team arrived at Broad Peak base camp on the 14th June, two days ahead of our schedule. The weather has been great and our porters have already set up and stocked camp 1 (5,400m) and camp 2 (6,250m). We all climbed to camp 1 and slept there, returning to base camp the following day. There has been some snow fall of the last couple of days, but overall, the weather seems fairly settled. A Japanese team on the route have already been up to camp 3. We are still on target to summit in early July.

Second Dispatch

We would like to apologize for the lack of dispatches from this year's Broad Peak expedition. We have experienced technical difficulties which have made it impossible for David Hamilton to email us with regular updates.

The latest is that the weather has been lousy over the past week, although it is now improving slightly. All teams are going up today, with a possible summit day within 2-3 days time. Just a brief bit of news - 8 Koreans have summited on K2 so far, the first big mountain in this area to be climbed this season.

Tom Briggs, Jagged Globe, UK

Third Update: Deep snow halts Summit attempt !

Hi, this is David Hamilton calling from Broad Peak base camp. We made our summit attempt on the 8th (July) along with members of a Swedish and a Spanish expedition. We got the highest anyone has been so far this year but we had to turn back at 7,700m because of deep snow.

Our porters are due here in 3-4 days, but we don't have time to make another summit attempt. The weather has been fairly unsettled here for more than a week and although moving on the mountain from camp 1 to camp 2 and 3 has been relatively straightforward, above camp 3 there are large accumulations of deep snow and we just didn't have the punch to make it through. We don't expect anyone else to be able to summit for at least a week or 2. As far as I can tell, conditions on Gasherbrum I and II are similar and no-one has summited there. The only success this season so far is the group of Koreans on K2 who came in very early and were able to summit at the end of June.

Everything is normal and everyone is happy, despite not making the summit. We'll be heading off to Skardu in a few days and will call you from there. Bye for now. David Hamilton, Expedition Leader

Update: Because of the unsettled weather, the attempt by the Jagged Globe Expedition was delayed a few days and with porters arriving soon, there isn't quite time to go for it again.....that's mountaineering!

For the others on Broad Peak, Jagged Globe tells us, " No-one else has summited on Broad Peak this season as yet that we know of. More surprisingly, is that no one has got up Gasherbrum II either.  There is still a lot of snow around.

Update: The South Korean Broad Peak expedition led by Mr. Park Young consisting of 7 members was successful in scaling the peak on July 30th by putting following members on its top.

Mr. Park Young Seok  30-7-00, Mr. Kim Hyoung Woo, Mr. Kang Seong Gyu, Mr. Oh Hee Joon, Mr. Lee Hyun Jo, and Mr. Nisar Hussain high porter.
