Byron
Smith
May 2000 Byron reaches the Summit of Everest !
It
appears that after Byron's Summit of Everest, he made
some person or persons unhappy with him or maybe the
old story of those that do not summit come away
unhappy. This is something EverestNews.com sees every year
where climbers on an expedition feelings vary with
their summit success. Those that reach the summit are
happy, those that do not are not. This is not always
the case, however in many cases it is true, especially
right after the climb.
In
the case of Byron's Summit we received anonymous
e-mails after his climb, stating people were out to
get him. [From those people who were out to get him!
One read "Brothers in Arms" Weird...]. Note
that when EverestNews.com have removed climbers from
our Summit lists before in the past, climbers spoke on
the record giving facts and details.
Byron's
Summit has never
been disputed
by
those on the Summit that day.
In fact when those rumors started after this Summit, we
did what we normally do, we asked the climbers!
In
this case, all climbers who reached the Summit that day
were Sherpas except Byron. So we asked, the now late,
Babu Chiri Sherpa and others Sherpa climbers if Byron
reached the Summit. Byron
reached the Summit. There is no dispute.
We have also seen several e-mails from other Sherpa
climbers.
We
have very high level of faith in the Sherpa climbers
telling the truth. In both 1998 and 1999,
EverestNews.com pulled Sherpa climbers names off the
Summit list when we asked them about OTHER CLIMBERS
who reached the Summit!!! 5
Sherpas in all, volunteered the information that they
did not Summit after they were reported !!!
The Sherpa climbers, we believe told the truth, about
other climbers who hired them. Information that was
confirmed by other climbers.
Some
climbers appear to be trying to "stir the
pot" on Byron's Summit again this year. So to
those that have an axe to grind with Byron, nothing
personal, but get over it...
Byron
Smith stood upon the Summit of Everest on May 21st
2000.
Byron
has decided in the past, like Andy Lapkass this year,
to "stay out of the fray as much as
possible". We respect this, but thought it was
time to confirm Byron's Summit for anyone who might be
influenced by others with an axe to grind. We have not
asked Byron to comment on this story.
