May
17, 2002 – The Mountain Link Office
Robert
called from Camp 2 this morning.
Two
helicopters arrived at Base Camp a few days ago.
They deposited food, drink and oxygen for the
remaining climbers and picked up Adam, Dave, Ole and
Ben, beginning the first leg of their long trip
home.
The
next morning Andy, Mike, JJ, “The Greek”, Robert
and the five Sherpa (Lhawang, Dawa, Bhoka Lama,
Lhakpa Nehru, and Ang Pasang) began their ascent.
After 8 hours of climbing in good weather everyone
arrived at Camp 2 strong and healthy.

Robert
said the weather has been great in the morning
but by mid-afternoon it gets “pissy and
monsoon-ish.” They will rest at Camp 2
tomorrow (Saturday), and if the weather is
good, move to Camp 3 on Sunday. At Camp 3
they’ll rest another day, move to Camp 4,
and if the mountain allows it, head for the
summit the following day. If conditions
deteriorate in what is considered Nepal’s
monsoon season, they will retreat and head
home.
Stay
tuned!
