In
the spring of 2002, Mountain Link will be leading
a team of American climbers to the seventh highest
peak in the world, Dhaulagiri (26,788ft.). This
mountain is one of the true jewels of the
Himalayas. While Cho Oyu is touted by many as an
easy 8000er, Dhaulagiri, named "White
Mountain," from the Sanskrit dhavala giri,
has a reputation of being one of the more
technically challenging 8000-meter peaks in the
Himalayas. One of the more alluring qualities of
Dhaulagiri is the lack of big commercial
expeditions as only seasoned mountaineers seem to
have interest in this formidable mountain. Most of
our team are Himalayan veterans who have climbed
together and have enjoyed success on peaks such as
Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Cho Oyu. Joining us
will be a first rate team of five Sherpas, all
close friends and climbing partners of Babu Chiri
Sherpa, along with Babu’s older brother Dawa.
Babu Chiri was one of Mountain Hardwear’s top
sponsored athletes. Some of Babu’s more notable
accomplishments were his speed ascent of Everest
in 16 hours 56 minutes and his 21 hour 30 minute
stay on the summit, without supplemental oxygen.
During Babu’s speed ascent, Dawa left a day
ahead and waited at the South Col for Babu. He
then broke trail for Babu to the summit.
One
focus of the expedition is to promote the Babu
Chiri Sherpa Trust Fund. The fund aids in
supporting Babu’s dream for schools in his
village, as well as, in supporting his wife and
six daughters. Mountain Link and Mountain Hardwear
believe this is a very important cause. We wish to
help support Babu’s family and realize his dream
of building schools for his village.
The
trust is through Mountain Hardwear. Donations may
be sent to Mountain Hardwear 4911 Central Avenue
Richmond, CA 94804 payable to: Babu Chiri Sherpa
Trust.
