Bad
news again from Spain... Five young Basque climbers,
from Navarra and Guipuzkoa are reported missing since
yesterday in Pumori area, near Everest. This small and
young expedition was trying to climb Pumori. This was
their first experience in Nepal. Actually their situation is unconfirmed, although other
reports assured their death. Yesterday there was a big
avalanche in this area and it was impossible to
contact the climbers via radio. Spanish TV
actually is reporting that they are dead. Stay

Some
more fresh news: It is confirmed that 2 members of
Basque expedition Sakana- Pumori were found dead by
Benatzio Irureta. Their names are unknown. A big
avalanche had trapped this expedition two days ago.

Update
10/19/2001: Sadly, it is fully confirmed. Five members
of Basque expedition Sakana-Pumori are reported dead.
Benantxio Irureta, had confirmed that the 5 climbers
were trapped by a huge avalanche at approximately 5500
meters between camps I and
II Pumori (7167 meters). Two dead bodies have been located by a Nepalese
helicopter but in a very dangerous place, so they
probably will remain there. There is not believed to
be any
chance of finding the rest of the climbers alive. The
rest of expedition members are safe at Lobuche. Best

10/20/2001: 5 members of the Euskal-Kerria Mt. Pumori
Expedition are reportedly missing, and presumed dead from 17th October,
2001, while they were attempting the summit of Mt.
Pumori from camp I. The 10 member Expedition team was
permitted to climb 7161 meter high Mt. Pumori from
North East Ridge under the Leadership of Mr. Aritz
Artieda, (1978), Student from Etxarri-Aranaz,
Nafarroa, Spain during the Autumn Season of 2001.
