Mount Everest North Side 2002 |
April
29th. Hans and Wilco have descended to ABC: After
a short stay on the North col Hans and Wilco had to
descend to ABC. Due to storm winds it was not possible
to stay higher on the mountain.
Report
24 April to 29: April Hans and Wilco climbed to Camp 1
on April 24th with the remaining gear for the high
camps. The plan is to install camp 2 and to carry the
gear for camp 3 to the campsite, high on the mountain.
The weather forecast from the Dutch Institute, which
is sent to the climbers, showed stormy weather. After
a short period of calm weather it was going to storm.
This turned out to be the situation. At this moment
the wind is so strong that none of the teams dares to
climb higher than ABC. The jetstream storm blowing
over North col makes a stay impossible. They heard
from other teams that tents are blown away in camp 1.
This doesn't have to mean their expeditions are
finished because most teams are prepared for these
occasions. We don't know if Hans and Wilco have their
tents damaged in Camp 1.
Wilco
has called his mother on Sunday April 28th for her
birthday. He told
her that they have descended to ABC to wait for better
weather conditions. The latest forecast from the Dutch
Institute gives little hope for weather improvements
this week.
Hans
and Wilco have still problems with their computer in
ABC. This means that we will receive fewer and smaller
reports. The picture shows Hans climbing to North Col
with good weather on April 24th.
