April
25,2002 ABC 6400 meters: After four days in BC we
went with the Yaks to ABC on April 18th. In
intermediate camp (5780 meters) we enjoyed
"delicious" Yak tea and we were happy to
reach ABC (6400 meters) on April 19th. The camp is
situated on the Moraines ridge of the East
Rongbuk glacier. Here are already 100 tents. We felt
the altitude while building platforms for the
basecamp tents. The camp is equipped with a
dining-tent, cooking-tent and toilet-tent. Before we
climb higher we have to have the ceremony first. A
Lama from BC has blessed our ice axes, crampons,
food and drinks and prayed to the mountain gods for
our save returns from the mountain. Prayer flags
were tied over the camp at the end of the ceremony. Andrea, Micha and Matthias left for North col on
7000 meter to build high-camp 1 the same day. The next
day, Christian and Werner carried the gear for
high-camp 2 up to North Col. Christian, our
Extreme-skier, took the opportunity to descend on
Snowblades from North Col. His remark:
"Did it once, but never again".
Markus is becoming the technical expert for
transmission and energy issues in ABC. We are
getting acclimatized to the extreme altitude of ABC.
At nigh it is -15 to -20°C inside the tent.
During the day we have wind, but also some sunshine.
When not climbing the mountain we sit together and
make plans for the coming days, listen to music,
read or meet the other expeditions. So far we are on
schedule. Some of us will go back to BC for a couple
of days of rest.
