American
Everest 2002 Expedition
With
a Ski Descent planned! |
Saturday,
6 April 2002 from Kathmandu, Nepal
We
arrived in Kathmandu yesterday after an uneventful
flight. All the bags made it! The first crux is over.
Nepal is in a state of emergency because of the Maoist
rebels. All shops and restaurants are closing at 10:00
pm. This makes it very different than the normal late
night atmosphere. There have been no problems in
Kathmandu itself, but caution is advised. Adrian's
departure from Kathmandu to BC was delayed by one day
because the Maoists blocked the road to Zangmu. It was
reported that one driver (Nepali) tried to get through
and had his hands cut off. The area was cleared and
they left today. We will meet him at BC on the
14th.

We
leave for Lhasa on the 9th, spend two days there and
then travel by land cruiser to Xigatse where we
spend one day, then on to Xegar for one day, then on
to BC. We had an interview with an associate of
Elizabeth Hawley this morning. She is a
mountaineering correspondent for Reuters News Agency
and covers Everest climbers from all sides. Today we
saw a snake charmer on the street and he let me pet
his King Cobra!!!!! Cool!!!
This
trip would not be possible without the help and
support of my friends and family. Special thanks to
Mom, Dad, Rachel, Ryan, Brian, Coda and all the
others that helped out along the way.
