Final
preparations before departure
In
mid-August, the members of the expedition went
through the last preparation phase before leaving
for Nepal. The aim was to mount to high altitude, to
facilitate acclimatisation to the thin air on
Everest.
The
first group, composed of Franc Oderlap, Grega Lacen
and Matej Flis, on 15 August left Zermatt for the
Matterhorn (4,478m). The same day Tadej and Urban
Golob joined the group in Zermatt, to summit
Europe's second highest mountain, Monte Rosa
(4,634m). The skis - of which Elan produced five
pairs for Davo - are 168cm long (such short skis are
less energy-consuming for the skier; the length of
the skis is also determined by the narrow passage
through the toughest ski section, the so-called
Hillary's Step at an altitude of 8,740m), one kilo
of weight, wider in the middle than ordinary ones
(without the very popular carving arc), with strong
torsion characteristics and reinforced edges. The
special model, made for special skiing, bears of
course the name of Everest 2000: It will not be
widely available, as the materials used are too
costly
