The
skis for Everest
New
skis, developed by Elan of Begunje, Slovenia,
especially for the Everest 2000 expedition, Davo
Karnicar tested on a glacier above the Moelltal ski
resort in Austria.
"I
am very much satisfied with the skis," says
Davo, who was also involved in the development
process. This is the second generation of skis for
Everest. "The first skis were not suitable -
they were extremely lightweight, yet too fragile.
The second ones that I've tested now are somewhat
heavier, yet firm enough for the tough conditions
that will await us at an altitude of well over
8,000m" The skis - of which Elan produced five
pairs for Davo - are 168cm long (such short skis are
less energy-consuming for the skier; the length of
the skis is also determined by the narrow passage
through the toughest ski section, the so-called
Hillary's Step at an altitude of 8,740m), one kilo
of weight, wider in the middle than ordinary ones
(without the very popular carving arc), with strong
torsion characteristics and reinforced edges. The
special model, made for special skiing, bears of
course the name of Everest 2000: It will not be
widely available, as the materials used are too
costly
