Dispatch 2. 29th March 2003
Hi all, We are now in Namche Bazaar – a Sherpa hub village approximately
3500m altitude. The weather here is very hot; about 30 degrees C during the
day.
We met with Dan Mazur earlier as he was passing through. He has been on a
mountain near to Everest for the last month – during which time it did not
snow or rain for 23 days straight. He said in all the years that he has been
coming to the region he has never known anything like it.
We plan to base ourselves here for the next few days and travel very light
over long distances at quick speed to help us with our acclimatization and
physical conditioning. Then we will fly back to Katmandu to prepare our final
details for Everest. I’m not looking forward to the flight back to Katmandu at
all. The flight over here was the worst ever. I (Ian) was sick for the entire
duration of the flight along with about four other people.
Even the pilot cheered when we landed!!!
Coming back to the Khumbu region has been a great experience. It’s like
watching a film for the second time – you seem to notice loads of details you
missed the first time. Plus, the weather is so much better than last time. We
are seeing mountains we didn’t even know were there. As usual the locals are
incredibly friendly and helpful. Although some things have changed - Andy and
I were walking up to a teahouse yesterday that we thought looked nice. We had
the shock of our lives when the owner told us it is $100 for a double room and
$75 for a single per night!!! We opted for the teahouse opposite about 80p per
night.
We will email again when back in Katmandu on about April 4th.
