A team of eight climbers
and over 20 Sherpas will climb to Camp
4 on Everest this spring to attempt to bring down hundreds of discarded
oxygen bottles and tons of trash left by other climbers in the past.
The climbers will also
attempt to summit Everest.
Members include Robert
Chang, Expedition leader Robert Hoffman of Belmont, CA, (his fourth expedition
to Everest), Deputy Expedition leader is Robert Boice of San Francisco. The
expedition trek leader is Jamling Tenzing Norgay, the son of one of the first
Everest summiteers, Tenzing Norgay. In addition, Sherman Bull, 62, of Stamford,
CT, is a physician member.
The lead Sherpa is Appa
2.) Canadian climber
Byron Smith and his all Canadian Expedition: www.cbc.ca/everest2000
The 39-year-old who was
born in Winnipeg, Manitoba plans his second attempt on Everest beginning in
March 2000. Byron grew up in Calgary and now lives in Vulcan, Alberta with his
son Zachary and wife Jamie. Byron Smith owns and runs a car dealership in Vulcan
and trains up to two and a half hours a day, six days a week to keep in climbing
shape. He will be one of the strongest climbers on the mountain EverestNews.com
is told by other veteran Everest climbers.
His Expedition Everest
2000 has contracted Science Alberta
Foundation to develop a multidisciplinary education program for Canadian
students. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will participate in a virtual
field trip to the "Top of the World." Teachers will appreciate the
easy access to relevant, prepackaged lesson plans and activities. Students will
enjoy the innovative, hands-on format of the Everest 2000 activities. Each group
of lessons will include geography, science, mathematics, language arts, and
physical education activities. This education program appears to be one of the
best ever offered.
This year Byron will lead
the expedition supported by Everest Veteran Tim Rippel, from Nelson British
Columbia as his cameraman and fellow climber. The Expedition will film Byron on
his attempt in what is hoped will be one of the better films to be made on the
South Side of Everest. Byron will have 12 Sherpa climbers from Asian Trekking on
his expedition supporting the many activities. This expedition promises to be
one of the main featured expeditions in 2000 with many educational
supporting the Nepalese Women Millennium Everest Expedition 2000
The group consists of
four women climbers, Lakpa Sherpa, Mingma Yangzi Sherpa, Dawa Yangzi Sherpa and
Dolma Sherpa. Only one Nepalese woman has reached the Summit of Everest. Pasang
Lhamu Sherpa died descending after reaching the Summit on 4/22/93. The
Expedition was organized with Mrs. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa as the expedition leader
supported by a strong male Sherpa team of male climbers including the great
Sonam Tshering Sherpa who gave his life trying to save Mrs. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa
Lakpa Sherpa is the
Expedition leader of the "Nepalese Women Millennium Everest Expedition
2000" and brother of Chhiring Sherpa, who has reached the Summit of Everest
4 times. Four climbers from Asian trekking will support this attempt. Two of
which (at least), EverestNews.com is told will be climbers who have previously
reached the Summit of Everest.
4.) A young American
climber Saeed Toossi who was born in Iran: www.everestdream.com
Saeed has his own
independent Expedition to Everest in Spring 2000. EverestNews.com, frankly
knew little to nothing about this climber. Therefore, we asked others and
himself. Here is what he told us:
"I was born in
Tehran/Iran in 1959. I started my climbing activities
when I was 14 years old in the North of Tehran. Started college in Iran
in 1979. Government closed down universities in 1982. Left Iran in 1983
to come to the US to continue my education. Completed my BS in Computer
Science at West Chester University in 1988. Started to work in the field
and completed my MS in Software Engineering at Penn State University in 1991. Got back in to climbing again in 1993.
My full climbing background is
on my site under Experience summary page. "
I do live in the
Washington D.C. Northern Virginia area and work as a Network Engineer.
5.) An experienced
Danish Expedition: Thrane & Thrane sponsorship of the first all Danish Mount
In the Spring of year
2000 the satellite communication company, Thrane & Thrane, is sponsoring the
first all Danish Mount Everest Expedition. The expedition named ‘BigE –
Thrane & Thrane Danish Everest Expedition 2000’ - will leave for the
Himalayas on March 27th and attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest in May.
All eight members of the BigE-expedition are among the most experienced Danish
climbers with significant mountaineering experience. Leader of the expedition
and team doctor is Henrik Jessen Hansen. Henrik Jessen Hansen has been on
five earlier expeditions to the Himalayas, including one to Mount Everest in
1996. This year was a disastrous year at Mount Everest with numerous casualties.
As a result, Henrik Jessen Hansen had to give up his personal attempt to reach
the summit. Instead Henrik Jessen Hansen established the world highest located
emergency hospital, where he performed important and needed rescue help.
Thrane & Thrane has
previously sponsored other mountaineering expeditions, including expeditions to
Mt. Everest in 1996 and Gasherbrum I in Pakistan in 1998. However, the
sponsorship of the BigE-expedition is by far the company’s biggest sponsorship
investment. The main objective of the BigE-sponsorship is to present Thrane
& Thrane as a leading-edge satellite communications company and to
demonstrate Thrane & Thrane product superiority and reliability under
extreme conditions. In particular in regard to Thrane & Thrane’s most
recent product innovation within satellite communication, the Capsat Messenger
(the M4 terminal). The BigE-expedition will bring along the Capsat Messenger as
its primary communication unit and Thrane & Thrane is confident that the
Capsat Messenger will perform trouble-free.
On the BigE-expedition
Thrane & Thrane is represented by director Lars Thrane and electronic
engineer, Jan Mathorne. Their participation in the expedition gives
Thrane & Thrane a first-hand experience of the Capsat Messenger’s quality
and reliability. In addition, it demonstrates Thrane & Thrane’s unique
company spirit. Thrane & Thrane attracts some of the best electronic
engineers and creative minds in the business and the people who work at Thrane
& Thrane strive to push back the limits and reach new heights.
The BigE-expedition and
its progress can be followed at Thrane & Thrane’s website: http://www.tt.dk/everest/intro.html
EverestNews.com friend Bo
Belvedere Christensen will also be part of this expedition. Bo has been part of
many expeditions to 8000 meter peaks including the Everest 1996 Expedition. This
expedition is planning a South Pillar Route see: http://www.tt.dk/everest/hq_rute.html

closer to this expedition and to show its main characteristics, how it is
planned, and the challenge it presents for its members. We'll also consider the
Himalayan region, its people, their way of life, etc.

Catalonian educational centers to the Internet. In the first edition, we carried
out the project "Discover the Bages County", and in the second, we
offered a "Virtual trip to Antarctica", in which Argentinian schools
participated. In the current school year (99-00), we are presenting "From
Montserrat to Mount Everest". This is a project addressed to the Bages
County, Spain and the international public. The project is sponsored by the
Fundació caixaManresa and has the support of European SchoolNet and

page. Many educational activities for students. Activities will be available on
the project website from January 1, 2000 until the middle of the following June.
As for educational centers, teachers will be able to define the length and
rhythm of their classes' participation and individual participation. For
everyone there will be some activities that continue for the life of the project
and others that have a limited time frame.
7.) Jagged Globe,
feature full dispatches from Jagged Globe in Spring 2000. Jagged Globe was
founded by Steve Bell. Steve has more than 20 years of mountaineering
experience including winter ascents of the north faces of the Eiger and
Matterhorn. He claims "Britain's first guided expedition to an 8,000m peak
and was the first Briton to lead clients to the summit of Everest." He has
climbed all of the continental summits and is a fully qualified UIAGM mountain

12.) Hugo returns to
During the spring of
2000, our expedition will return to Mount Everest, after two successful summits
to the top of the world (1997 and 1999), with the purpose that Babu Chiri
Sherpa, our Sirdar Sherpa, will establish a new world record of speed climbing
the summit and Hugo Rodriguez will become the first Mexican man to achieve three
ascents to Mount Everest.
However, our mission is
not just exclusively the sportive challenge implied but to promote a new
conscience of common effort. We will be doing some events supporting Ecology
-like doing a partial cleaning at Mount Everest- and we will be also working on
a medical scientific project in order to study how does extreme heights affects
the immunological and cardiovascular systems, as well as the energetic
metabolism. Their web site is: http://www.everest2000.net

14.) Gabriel Filippi with
Babu Chiri Sherpa
An air-traffic manager based in Iqaluit is
planning to scale the heights of Mount Everest. Gabriel Filippi, 39, a mountain
climber, would be the third Quebecer to ascend the world's highest peak.
The highest peak Filippi
has attained in a quarter-century of climbing has been Argentina's Mount
Aconcagua, an altitude of 6,962 meters. He has not attempted any 8000 meter peak
The expedition will be
led by Babu Chiri
Sherpa, of Nepal, and will include three- four Mexican climbers. The first
Quebecer to reach the top of Everest was Yves Laforest, in 1991. Last year, Bernard
Voyer became the second Quebecer to do so.
Filippi left for Everest
yesterday ! EverestNews.com spoke with him by phone. " I am very excited
with so many things to do".
Babu Chiri Sherpa who
established the world record by spending 21 hours on the summit of Mount Everest
without auxiliary oxygen in the Spring of 1999. He has already summited Mount
Everest 9 times and this year, he will attempt to reach the Base Camp from the
summit in 16 hours, which would be a record time!

15.) Canadian Everest
The four-member team, the
Canadian Everest Expedition 2000, say they are not peak happy. Technically,
they are highly skilled. Mentally, they are driven by passion, but they won't
take unnecessary risks just to make the summit. Team leader Ben Webster,
36, said he wanted a team that would focus on the process during the lengthy
Everest climb, and not just on the summit awaiting them. Physically and
mentally, the team is prepared to greet Everest. With a variety of ascents
tucked into the teams' climbing history, they have a lot of successful
highlights to refer back to. However, the team does not have much H.A.
experience. Webster exudes bountiful energy that seems to permeate to others
around him. This added to his zest for mountaineering makes his natural
leadership skills apparent.
In his 20 years as a
professional adventure guide and instructor, Webster has filled his spare time
with climbing, kayaking and snowboarding. Along with his summit of Africa's
highest peak, Kilimanjaro, Webster reached the peak of Mt Illiampu in
Boliva at 20,000 feet. Also accredited to Webster is the first ascent of the
Southwest Ridge of Mt. Thor in the Arctic Circle. In 1988 Webster achieved a
winter ascent of Mt. Bhagirathi, located in India. With dozens of ascents
stretching from the Alps and the Andes to the Himalayas and the Rockies,
Webster, a Toronto native, is the leader of the Canadian Everest Expedition
His team members include Benoit
Robitaille, Francois Bédard and Claude Bérubé, all members
of the Fédération québécoise de la montagne et de l'escalade (Quebec
Federation of Mountains and Climbing.) Team member Bérubé, 45, of Lac St.
Charles, Que. is well known in the climbing world. He is known for his technical
expertise and a long list of impressive climbs. Bérubé was the first to summit
the southwest pillar on Mt. Thor and the East Ridge on Mt. Mjolnir in Baffin
Island. He is also known for his climbing Mt. McKinley in Alaska and Mt. Steele
in the Yukon. He is owner of APIC, a company specializing in designing and
building artificial climbing walls. Benoit Robitaille of Beauport, Que. has
welcomed various climbing challenges throughout Quebec and the Canadian and
American Rockies. Both he and team member Francois Bedard reached 19,550 feet on
Mt. Logan and on 22,831 feet on Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina.
The climbers are
accompanied by sports psychologist Sean Egan, who is studying the mental strain
on the climbers, and Dr. Max Buxton, who will provide medical services at base
