"Until we meet again"
Since
Charlie’s return from Everest our family has been
“overcome by events” (“OBE” as we used to say in the
Navy). In case you hadn’t heard, June 6th was
declared by the Governor as “Charlie Wittmack Day;”
June 9th was declared by the City Council as “Charles
N. Wittmack Day” (at which ceremony he also received
the key to the city), and he was recognized by the
Iowa Senate during their recent special session.
Unfortunately, Charlie has been unable to find any
establishment in town where these entitle Charlie (or
his Dad) to a free coke (or beer). And the key
doesn’t work in ANY lock. Such is life. |
The
best news so far is that Charlie did become an
honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Des Moines
(Downtown) which entitles him to a free lunch when he
attends. I don’t think the Kiwanians fully understood
their financial exposure until Charlie’s eyes widened
(and his smile broadened) as he reminded them that he
is presently unemployed and will become a destitute
law student this fall – that is, a free lunch each
week sounded really good to him!
Actually, he is very
appreciative (albeit a bit embarrassed) by of all these very thoughtful
recognitions.
An interesting phenomenon is
starting to take place. People outside the state are beginning to hear about
the expedition and are quite amused that an Iowan would even know about Mt.
Everest, much less think about climbing it, and actually make it! Morning
radio is amazing; Santa Barbara, California being the most recent example.
That’s a wrap up of the most
current events…
Finally, “Charlie’s Mother,”
“Charlie’s Sis,” Charlie’s Girlfriend,” and “Charlie’s Dad” want to thank you
for the outpouring of support experienced during, and after the expedition.
The Val Air celebration was attended by Charlie’s friends from as far as Texas
and Seattle; by Chuck Offenburger and friends from the Iowa 150 Bike Ride; and
by fellow workers from Neumann Brothers, his church, the schools, and even Lt.
Governor, Sally Pederson. It was a marvelous evening.
So with this dispatch, it’s
appropriate we sign off (until we meet again), with our heartfelt thanks to
each of you for your part in making this a successful expedition!
Thank you and Godspeed in
achieving your Everest!
Dee, Ellen, Catie & Art
