Bio
for Roger Gocking (10/9/43)
I got into rock climbing when I moved
to California in 1969 and discovered Yosemite
Valley. From that it was a short hop, skip and a
jump into mountaineering in the High Sierra. In
1977 I went to Peru to climb in the Cordillera
Blanca and did a first ascent on Pucahirca
Central. |
The following year, along with two companions, I
went to Alaska and did the first alpine style
ascent of the French Ridge on Mount Huntington.
For many years South America became my summer
destination and I climbed in the Cordillera
Blanca, the Huayhuash, on the volcanoes of
Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. In 1990 I
went Asia for the first time and made an
unsuccessful attempt on the North West Ridge of
Rakaposhi. In 1993 I was back in Pakistan and
climbed the south side of Gasherbrum II. In 1995 I
tried the North Ridge of Everest and made it to
the Second Step where high winds and extreme cold
forced me to give up. In 1997 I was back in the
Karakoram and came within 80 meters of the summit
of Broad Peak. In 1999 I climbed Khan Tengri in
the Tien Shan. In 2000, I returned to South
America and made an unsuccessful attempt on Nevado
Ausangate in southern Peru.
In addition to these peaks that were 6000 meters
and higher, I have climbed in many areas of the
continental United States and Canada as well as in
Africa. I enjoy the adventure of discovering new
areas of the world and experiencing new cultures. |
