Dispatches 5/14/2003: China SOHU color-display report group: May 12 is the second day since China SOHU mountaineering team set out for the 8848m zenith for the last time. At 8:30 a.m., the climbers left the 6000m-camp with the objective of reaching the C3 staging camp at the attitude of 6500 meters today.
Team members are familiar with the part between the Base Camp and the 6500m-camp, so all the things went well. But there will be great changes in next 120 hours according to the weather forecast. The best time for the climbers to reach the zenith is supposed to be around May 20. Some trouble may come to China SOHU team, because the team has planned to climb the zenith on May 17. At 11:40 a.m., some of SOHU climbers reached the march-camp at the attitude of 6500 meters safely. Yongfeng Wang called Zhixin Li (who was staying in the base camp) that they would climb as they had planed. According to the original plan, they will have a rest for two days in the march-camp. After members arrived at the march-camp at noon today, they had a wonderful lunch (including chicken soup, wonton and fish etc). It is a satisfying victory for them to complete today's climbing plan.
Yesterday, according to the forecast provided by the Switzerland team, the weather on the Everest from May 16 to 18 would become worse very soon. So, there was no response to SOHU team's propose. In addition, SOHU climbing party was forced to adjust the original plan considering the condition that the Chinese team had to fight themselves. Today, the foreign mountaineering teams on the Everest received quite different forecast: the weather on the Everest on May 17 and 18 would be absolutely good. As a result, SOHU China got hot responses from other teams.
Teams from USA, Switzerland, New Zealand and so on were each using some of their manpower and material resource to try their best to make the second sidestep to the 8700m altitude passable. The list of the first commando of SOHU team had been modified. The female team member Qun Liang was taken back to the commando, and will set out from the staging camp for the zenith climbing tomorrow together with Fuyong Liu and Junchi Chen.
