Everest South Side Expedition: Everest 50
The fiftieth anniversary expedition. (French)

A Sherpa’s ascent to Camp 3 © Everest 50
Jean Mi sends to us a mail from Base Camp (April 30th)

“Hi to everybody, I write to tell that everything is going all right. The computer works when he wants and especially when Régis looks after it. We are all at base camp except the friend Hugues who climbed yesterday morning and intends to sleep at camp III, thing that only Patrick Gabarrou made for the moment. There are also Gilles, Daniel Blanchi and Jean-Christophe who went down to Lobuche.

In fact, with the new optimistic weather forecasts, a first attempt could take place around May 9. We have divided the group into 2 in order to have more chances. Health is good and to return to base camp, it is resting. We may make this first attempt with the Indo-Nepalese army who are on the same crenel as us. I expect much from Yann, the router, in order to confirm if we try or not the ascent on May 9, which means to be at Southern col on May 8. Here is the main thing of the news, it would be formidable to offer a summit to the trekkers who arrive about May 12. We can dream. These last days, as predicted, there was snow, but this fact is not very serious, it is just necessary that I fix my somewhat collapsed tent.

It is not too cold, it freezes nevertheless systematically in the tents, we can see it with the small urine bottle whose contents are invariably cold in the morning. So long. Jean-Mi "

Hugues arrived well at camp II, he is expected Thursday or Friday at base camp. Francois, from the medical team, also known as the marmot of the group, broke all the records: since his return from camp III, he sleeps since 24h! Everest 50 made the happiness of a group of trekkers by inviting them to drink a tea in the mess tent. The history does not say which were happiest to meet new heads... Fausto di Stefani, from the Italian expedition, made glacial archaeology and found some fragments of objects from preceding expeditions with parts dating from the Fifties.

Forecast of high wind on the Everest as from Friday: nearly 200 km/h of wind are expected on Sunday May 4. All the members of Everest 50 will be then safe at the base camp to prepare the first ascent. The tension goes up among the team, the mountain is now more than ever in everyone’s head. Now the ascent becomes a reality, it will be necessary to go up. Oxygen handling are done, and some of team’s member still feel the need to revise for the Great Day. The two groups are distributed: Group A, for the first attempt: Jean Michel Asselin (leader of the group), Daniel Blanchi, Hugues D' Aubarède, Aude Joncquiert-Latarjet, Jean-Marc Seban, Nicolas Mugnier, Philippe Rebreyend, Régis Garrigue, Eric Loizeau, Bruno Gallet, Dominique Blanc-Vial. Group B, for the second attempt : Marcel Lemenissier (leader), Gilles Pollini, Maurice Thiney, Laetitia Cuvelier, Mario Trimeri, Basile Gueorguievsky, Jean-Christophe Van Waes, Guillaume Lucazeau, Brice Lequertier. Patrick Bérhault and Patrick Gabarrou, as per their experience, will join the group of their choice.

At mid trip, each one gave its impressions: "it is long, very long!", Jean-Marc Seban. "This expedition, that rolls, easy", Marcel Lemenissier. "I am here to write a page of friendship", Patrick Gabarrou. "I am happy of this mountain and the life with the others", Mario Trimeri. "Now, it is another mountain", Jean-Michel. "Perhaps I will reach camp I", Frederic Bernard (camera man base camp). "I want so much to make telemark in the Western cwm!”, Daniel Gueorguievsky. "the sherpas did an extraordinary work", Jean-Christophe Van Waes. "I did not expect such an accessible organization", Maurice Thiney. "Very good moments together", Daniel Blanchi. "Zen, happy", Gilles Pollini. "I will carry my snowboard until  top", Dominique Blanc-Vial. "Happy, but it is hard", Aude Joncquiert Latarjet. “We live all together, sometimes it explodes, but I manage", Brice Lequertier. "At base camp it is holidays, at the summit it will be happiness", Guillaume Lucazeau. "It is the unknown but there is a very nice atmosphere", Philippe Rebreyend. "I initially came here for the friends; from my point of view, the definition of Chomolangma must be "Mom", Patrick Bérhault. "I want to see Jean-Michel up there", Laetitia Cuvelier. "All is happiness", François Vandevelde. "There are some who do not know it yet, but they should not go up too high", Régis Scrubland. We miss the appreciation of Basile, Hugues, Eric and Nicolas who were still on the mountain at the time of the survey.
