Horrible news, Arnaud the sound recorder for the French TV has died. Very sad ...

The dispatches from the French Team: Wednesday, April 9th

Surprisingly quiet for somebody whose trade was the sound, behind his clear eyes and its somewhat silent air, hid an immensely cordial heart. Arnaud Saulnier, 30 years old, from the Doubs, did not awake this morning at base camp of Everest (5300m of altitude). Found died in his tent and in spite of 2 hours efforts of work by the team of Doctor Régis Garrigue, we could only note his death. Everybody is in a state of shock. This evening, at the base camp, a wake is organized to his memory. Arnaud was the caretaker of sound for his TV team of the Company Taxis Brousse/Toulaho leaded by Yannick Vallençant.

Thursday, April 10th

We were waiting for some news by e-mail from Base Camp, but the computer took cold (-6º under tents) and refused to work. Since then, we warned warmed it in the kitchen and should be operational tomorrow. As for the hard journey lived yesterday, everybody has been shocked (hard). This morning, an helicopter came to pick up Arnaud at Gorak Shep, under the base camp, and his friend Martin decided to leave the expedition to accompany him back to France. All those which had met Arnaud during the trek did lot of mileage to greet the friend. Then, in spite of moral very beaten, each one turned to the life. The daily tasks appear to be a good refuge: the sun was there and some of them profited from it to make their toilet, to wash some effects, to test the material on the first blocks of Ice Fall... A lot of debates (discussions), doubts about this engagement with the Top of the World, its force also. Tomorrow, according to the Tibetan Calendar, the Puja, the Sherpa ceremony to celebrate gods will take place, first of any engagement with the mountain ; and in everybody's heart, the clear glance of Arnaud.

Mercredi 9 avril 2003 - Wednesday the 9th of April

"Étonnamment silencieux pour quelqu'un dont le métier était le son, derrière ses yeux clairs et son air quelque peu taciturne se cachaient un coeur immensément chaleureux. Arnaud Saulnier*, 30 ans, originaire du Doubs, ne s'est pas réveillé ce matin au camp de base de l'Everest à 5300 m d'altitude. Retrouvé décédé dans sa tente et malgré près de 2h d'efforts de réanimation par l'équipe du Docteur Régis Garrigue, nous n'avons pu constater que son décès". Tout le monde est en état de choc. Ce soir au camp de base, une veillée est organisée à sa mémoire.

Jeudi 10 avril 2003 - Tuesday the 10th of April

Nous attendions des nouvelles par e-mail depuis le camp de base, mais l'ordinateur a eu trop froid (moins 6°C sous les tentes) et a refusé de fonctionner. Il est depuis "au chaud" dans la cuisine et devrait être opérationnel d'ici demain. Suite à la journée d'hier, toute l'équipe a été fortement secouée. Ce matin un hélicoptère est venu chercher Arnaud à Gorak Shep, sous le camp de base, et son ami Martin a décidé de quitter l'expédition pour le raccompagner en France. Tous ceux qui avaient rencontré Arnaud pendant le trek d'approche ont fait la route pour saluer l'ami. Puis, malgré un moral très atteint, chacun s'est employé à se tourner vers la vie. Les tâches quotidiennes se révèlent des valeurs refuge : le soleil était là et certains en ont profité pour faire un brin de toilette, laver quelques effets, tester son matériel sur les premiers blocs de l'Ice Fall,... beaucoup de discussions, de remises en question sur cet engagement pour le toit du monde, sa force aussi. Demain, en accord avec le calendrier tibétain, aura lieu la Puja, cérémonie sherpa pour célébrer les dieux, préalable à tout engagement sur la montagne ; et dans le coeur de chacun, le regard clair d'Arnaud.
