05/21/2003: Adverse conditions On Everest: After four
hours without communication and having reached 8,500
meters of altitude, the Tarragona expedition and the
rest of the hopeful climbers did not have any other
option but to turn around and go back to the tents at
camp IV. The strong winds in excess of 80 Km/h almost
end the Tarragonan dream of touching the roof of the
world. What started as a placid night became an
inferno of cold and wind which left no other option.
There are talks of a second possibility, but it will
all depend on the physical and psychological shape of
the climbers and, of course, the weather report, but
it seems that this year it is getting harder to reach
the summit of Mother Earth. The Tarragonan
expeditioneers are now going back to camp IV, not
closing the door at all and they left their tent well
stocked with oxygen and the rest of the materials
needed to attack the summit.
