Everest 2003: Himalayan Guides 2003 Everest Expedition
Featuring reports from Ian Mackay

Dispatch #1 Himalayan Guides 2003 Everest Expedition: The team will begin to assemble in Kathmandu on 21st March. The first to arrive will be Henry Todd (team leader) and Vicky Jack (team member). I (Ian Mackay) will arrive in Kathmandu on 24th - if the conflict in Iraq does not affect flights from Europe! Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #2 Namche Bazar (3440m), 28th March: We flew into the mountain airstrip at Lukla yesterday morning It's still pretty hairy even though the airstrip is now tarmac as opposed to the stones and gravel which it was until a couple of years ago. After recruiting some porters we trekked along the Dudh Kosi valley to Phagding (2610m) where we found a lodge to stay the night. During the afternoon I began to feel a little feverish and by evening I had a full blown fever - hot and cold sweats etc. Check here for the full dispatch.

Update from Patrick Kenny:  Namaste Everyone! Arrived uneventfully with gear in Nepal yesterday. Last minute gear checks completed and will depart tomorrow or the next day for Lukla with our team physician. Check here for the full dispatch.

Update from Patrick Kenny: April 5, 2003  Gear Shift, Namche Bazaar, 11,300 FT. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #3 HIMALAYAN GUIDES 2003 EVEREST EXPEDITION We arrived at base camp at 2.30 pm on 6th April. Our acclimatisation plan had worked perfectly and no team members were suffering from altitude problems. Everybody's general health was good with no tummy or chest problems. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #4 On 11th April we climbed to the top of the Khumbu Icefall and returned to Base Camp as an acclimatisation exercise. We left our Base Camp at about 5.30 am so that most of the climb would be undertaken before the sun appeared over Everest West Ridge and turned the icefall into an oven. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #5 We have now been up and down the Khumbu icefall twice and have slept overnight in Camp 1. We are back in Base Camp for two days rest. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #6 We are back down at Base Camp having spent three nights at Camp 2 in the Western Cum. Our descent through the Icefall was delayed a result of an accident when a ladder collapsed causing serious injury to a sherpa. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #7 Himalayan Guides 2003 Expedition Everest Base Camp (BC) 2nd May 2003: Our preparations are complete and we are waiting for a date for our summit bid. We have been up the Lhotse Face to camp 3 in stormy conditions and have all returned safely to BC. Check here for the full dispatch.

Dispatch #8 & 9 Himalayan Guides 2003 Expedition Everest: The Indian/ Nepalese Army Expedition combined with the British Expedition to break the trail and fix the ropes above the South Col...  Check here for the full dispatch.
