Daily News: 2/28/99 Report
Makalu 98: Jeanne Panek, who was on Makalu in
1998 has just recently published her web site. Her home page is
http://www-cbe2.ced.berkeley.edu/panek/. Her Makalu page is:
http://www-cbe2.ced.berkeley.edu/panek/makalu1.htm. When asked about her web site, she
told EverestNews.com, " I just put the site together to share my experience on Makalu
with friends. I'm glad you like it so much! Thanks. " EverestNews.com asked Jeanne, so
what's next ? " Climbing plans are limited to the Fall, after my research field
season (May-September) in the forests of the Sierra. This Fall I'm leading a trip to Ama
Dablam, which I had a great view of from Makalu and fell in love with it. I'll be
spending whatever free time I have between now and then in the Sierra, backcountry skiing
and climbing. Thanks again for your interest! " Best, Jeanne
Jeanne seems like a real nice person. The type of climber we
love to give some press too ! Make sure you check her reflections on the Makalu trek. A
great Sunday read and it's free ! http://www-cbe2.ced.berkeley.edu/panek/reflecti.htm. If
you like her site as much as we did some of you might want to drop her a line wishing her
good luck ! Jeanne's web site is our EverestNews.com web site of the week. Submit your
favorites web sites to everestnews2004@adelphia.net

Makalu Spring 99, News from Gary Pfisterer & Ginette
Harrison ! (and Brigitte Muir !): Three members of the climbers who has done the seven summits.
" Ginette is just off to France today. She has
been nominated for the Piolet D'Or award (golden ice axe) given each year for
the most significant climbing achievement of the year. She was nominated for
her first female ascent of Kangchenjunga by the north face. This was the last of the
8000ers to be climbed by a woman.
Yes, Brigitte Muir is on our team for Makalu. It
promises to be a strong team with eight of the twelve members having prior Himalayan
experience. It is a non-guided and non-commercial expedition. We will be attempting
the Northwest Ridge. We do not use high altitude porters or bottled oxygen on our
expeditions.
We began assembling our own teams to climb peaks we wanted
to attempt in a style that we liked. We are planning climbs to Dhaulagiri Northeast
Ridge in the fall of 1999 and to K 2 Abruzzi Ridge in summer 2000. " Cheers, Gary
Pfisterer
Daily News: 2/26/99 Report
Everest Spring 99: Pete Athans, a North Face climber and one
of the best climbers American has, will be back on Everest In Spring 99, as reported
earlier here on EverestNews.com. Our present understanding is that with Pete will be Charles
Corfield and Bill Crouse. Bill is a North Face representative. He attempted Lhotse
in 97 unsuccessfully. He used to be a guide. Charles in one of the more high profile
people on Everest. Charles Corfield, a Cambridge University trained mathematician, has a
engineering background. In 1986 Corfield co-founded Frame Technology, a leading desktop
publishing software company, which was sold to Adobe Systems in 1995. Corfield currently
holds various board positions, serving on the board of VIP Calling, Inc. and the advisory
boards of OnDemand, Inc., Tumbleweed Corp., and Jump Software. Charles Corfield also
serves on the board of directors of Cambridge University. Yes, he is one of the rich guys
on Everest. We understand this expedition will be called the North Face Ltd. Expedition
and will do some filming for the National Geo. on the South Side this Spring. Hopefully,
we will learn more details. It appear Pete is actually the only North Face climber on THIS
expedition.
There is at least one other North Face climber (Willie
Benegas) on the OTT Expedition led by Jon Tinker, which is the huge expedition this year
on Everest's South Side. More on Willie Soon ! (Great News !!!)
Please check out the Erik Weihenmayer
page ! Erik is back and his answers to Your questions which will
be posted this weekend. Erik is a very interesting climber and person. The staff at
EverestNews.com highly encourages You to read this information on his page. He is truly

Daily News: 2/24/99 Report
Everest Spring 99: EverestNews.com is preparing every day
for Everest 99. Everest 99 should be an event with several movies being produced along
with the usual large numbers of climbers. EverestNews.com senses we will have a larger number
of experienced climbers on the South Side in 99. Therefore, EverestNews.com figures it
is time to tell You a little more about our reporting plans for 99. EverestNews.com
will have
several climbers and expeditions reporting in, some on and some off the record.
Several have asked how EverestNews.com does this. It is a
good question. A Question we are still trying to figure out ! Presently, EverestNews.com
is
primarily supported by other investment ventures by the company. Some revenue
dollars from sponsors are obtained that help to off set some of the bills for the site.
The entire staff is paid from other projects, and basically volunteers their time to
EverestNews.com. The staff loves EverestNews.com. It is so much more interesting than posting
classified ads for car sales or other things we might do with our day. EverestNews.com
hopes
before May 99 to secure sponsors to assist with EverestNews.com. You can help
EverestNews.com by
purchasing you products, books, gear, office supplies etc. from the sponsors on
EverestNews.com !!!
On Expeditions: EverestNews.com, as always, plans to
cover all climbers ! all expeditions ! From the Sherpas, to the Czechs, to the Americans,
and hopefully will obtain a source for the Chinese !!! We have several arrangements to
work with several expeditions in 1999. However, EverestNews.com never pays for the News. We
feel that crosses the line. Obviously, expeditions that provides reports on or off the
record to EverestNews.com will receive more press on the site, simply by us knowing more
about what they are doing, and usually EverestNews.com referring our readers (You !) to their
web site for more details. EverestNews.com also attempts to work with all web sites and all
climbers who don't have web sites to bring you all the News. On expeditions that give
exclusive reports to a commercial site, EverestNews.com will not focus unless an arrangement
is made with that commercial site, so as not to get into their "space".
EverestNews.com will report when their climbers (assuming we know) reach the summit and any other
events that would seem to need reported.
On Deaths: EverestNews.com, as usual, plans are to hold
deaths until we are notified that the families are notified (usually they contact us) or
until after the death (s) have been reported by other sites.
Back to the News on Thursday !
Everest Expeditions Links are now indexed on the Site Index !
In May, 2000, Byron Smith will
summit Mount Everest, accompanied by 4,500,000 Canadian school children and their
families. The Science Alberta Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta &
N.W.T., the Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Toronto Sun newspapers, the Sir
Edmund Hillary Foundation and Byron Smith invite you to be a Sponsor in this exciting,
Internet-based education program.
For more
information on Byron's expedition See Everest 2000. Byron is
looking for more sponsors to get involved, let us know if you have an interest. It will be
an Event this time !
For those of you just
interested in Everest, EverestNews.com feels you will find Byron's write up interesting. It
gives you an idea the planning behind an expedition of this type.
EverestNews.com Classified Ads
are
finally here. They are a work in progress with several more ads to submit in the next
several days...and improvements to be added. Please tolerate us as this addition is tested
to see where it evolves.
Everest Spring 99: EverestNews.com plans something a little new
this Spring. Over the next several days and weeks EverestNews.com will attempt to bring you a
look at what it is like to be on a Everest North Side (Tibet) ABC trek. We would expect to
be conclude this "look" before the climbers start their treks... depending on
how it is received EverestNews.com will decide whether to head more in that direction.
Everest Spring 99: EverestNews.com is hearing that the Danish
climber Michael Strynoe will be back on Everest in Spring 1999. It appears a few climbers
are changing teams and making final decisions as things sort out for Spring Everest 99.
Everest Spring 99: On the Lighter Side, we have been
researching "Renata", Goran Kropp's girl friend...who reportedly will be
attempting Everest this year from the South Side.
We found she is a Swedish woman, and has the claim of the first Swedish woman
above 8000 meters without the use of bottled Oxygen when she attempted Shisha Pangma in
1997 with Goran and French climber Cyril Destremau. We found little else except that she
helps manages Groan Company.
And Yes she has an last name: Chlumska.
On Goran, we receive continued request for information. We
think because of the many stories about his climb in 1996. It should be noted, Goran
reached the summit of K2 before 1996, and has lead several expeditions. The theory that he
is a poor single climber is far from the truth. A marketing machine might be a bigger
summary. His web site is listed on the web site of the week
page.
Sounds like Jamie Clarke, less than halfway through their
journey, these Canadian adventurers traveling through the desert are feeling the strain of
the heat and desert. The Empty Quarter of Arabia -- a huge sand desert that extends
through Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates -- is still ahead. Check out at
www.alwaysadventure.net . His other web
site is www.jamieclarke.com.
Jamie reached the Summit of Everest in Spring 1997 on his second attempt
at Everest. They are posting updates regularly via sat phone to the Web site.
Everest Spring 99 will soon be here ! Most climbers
are making preparations to leave with many climbers making acclimatization treks to Gokyo
and other areas.
Enrique Guallart-Furio !
"I
will depart to Nepal next February 27th arriving Kathmandu 28th. I will make an
acclimatization trek to Gokyo and Kala Pattar areas during 20 days. With this trek I will
be well acclimatize before I arrive to Everest base camp. I made a poster of with the
words Everest-News to make a picture with it in Everest !!!. " Enrique
The Ang Dorjee
Sherpa Page is up ! (Official name is Chuldim) although is popularly known as
Ang Dorje. He has climbed:
1992 Spring Summit of Mt. Everest via South Col
1993 Spring Summit of Mt. Everest via South Col
1994 Spring Summit of Mt. Everest via South Col
1995 Autumn Summit of Mt. Cho Oyu (Tibet)
1996 Spring Summit of Mt. Everest with Rob Hall
1996 Autumn Summit of Mt. Cho Oyu (Tibet)
1996 Summer (August) Summit of Broad Peak (Pakistan)
1996 Autumn Summit of Mt. Ama Dablam (SW Ridge)
1997 Spring Summit of Mt. Everest via South Col
Yes, that is five summits of Everest !
Ang Dorje will be climbing on Everest from Nepal in April '99 with Enrique
Guallart-Furio.
He will then go to Norway in the Summer to do some guiding work
there.
Check the page for a Picture of Ang Dorjee Sherpa with his
friend Enrique Guallart-Furio in his house in Pangboche (Solu Khumbu-Nepal).
The Plans for a Nepal Mountaineering Museum continues.
EverestNews.com understands the Korean Alpine Club has contributed to the
Nepal Mountaineering Association to be used for construction of a mountaineering museum.
We understand the museum is expected to be complete in late 99 or early 2000 in
Pokhara at a cost of over 1 million US dollars. Numerous mountaineering clubs
including the Japanese Alpine Club had contributed significantly for construction of the
museum. If any of our readers has detailed information on this project, we would love to
know more also !
Look for an Ang Dorjee Sherpa Page soon !

expedition that you should check out at www.alwaysadventure.net . His other web
site is www.jamieclarke.com. Jamie reached the Summit of
Everest in Spring 1997 on his second attempt at Everest. They'll be posting
updates regularly via sat phone to the Web site.

Everest Spring 99: As reported earlier, Graham
Ratcliffe will be back on Everest in 1999. Graham who will be on Henry Todd's expedition as
EverestNews.com understands it, will be acting as
a reporter for the BBC. Graham has made several attempts on Everest resulting in a
successful Summit from the North Side in 1995. He attempted the South
Side in 1996 and 1997. In 1996 he was with the group at Camp 4 the night of May 10.
If successful in 1999, he would become the first Briton to climb the
mountain from both the North and the South Sides. However, as reported earlier other
British climbers including Jon Tinker and Graham Hoyland also will be attempting Everest,
in what would complete their summits from both sides. EverestNews.com should also state, we
know of no competition between these climbers.
The BBC web site is http://www.bbc.co.uk/everest !
