Dispatch 5/6/01

Tashi Deley! To begin with - sorry for the late dispatch. The reason is that the solar panel doesn't work as it is supposed to. But now and in the future it will be possible to send because I have bought a big solar panel and batteries in Lahsa to power my laptop. Since last night we are back in Lahsa. Since our last dispatch we left Lahsa and reached our base camp  at 5300 m, surrounded by fascinating mountain scenery. The base camp was situated on hard and grassy ground amidst big stoneblocks. To the southwest we had a lesser mountain (6000 meter) and to the northeast the Nyanchen Thangla mountain-massif rose with its four summits above 7000 meters.

Because of bad weather with storms the first six days, we had to concentrate on establishing our high camp and no possibility for any summit-attempt.

At this time both the morale of the group an the temprature outside to a low.  The daily snowfall and wind in base camp continued. Only the sleeping bag offered protection against the extreme cold weather.

Finally at 29.04 the first climbers under my lead reached the central summit(7117m) in a storm. At this point the morale was growing again. The next day the weather was better and four more climbers reached the summit under the lead of Theo Fritsche. The mountain must be one of the harder 7000 meters. The 800 meter high flanks of the mountain has a gradient of 35-40 degrees and is very exposed. An error here while climbing with crampoons can be fatal. Two days later four more climbers reached the summit under the lead of Pilippe Perli. Two of the 6000-meters were also climbed.

And the south-east summit of Nyanchen Thanglha was climbed by me and my father in an alpine style and the summit reached at 02.05. This could possible be a first ascent.

The summiters:
29.4.: Erich Gatt, Stefan Gatt, Hans Stemmer, Erich Weitlahner
30.4.: Wolfgang Fasching, Theo Fritsche, Mario Kastner, Hartmut Stockert
2.5.: Herwig Frisch, Philippe Perlia, Matthias Respondek, Johann Steinbφck
2.5.: South-east summit: Erich + Stefan Gatt

At 07.05 [May 7th] we are starting on our way to Everest base camp, and hoping to reach Advanced Base Camp (6450m) at 11.05 [May 11th].
