"We
were one day away from Everest when we heard the
terrible news from the USA. We were very sorry to hear
about it. I know in Britain there was a great deal of
shock, and an unprecedented 3 minute silence was held
all over the country to remember those lost in the
inferno.
Suddenly
our expedition's aims didn't seem so important any
more.
The
Chinese quite rightly were concerned about any flights
over their border. If their radars saw a
transponder light up at 36,000 feet on an unidentified
aircraft so near to Pakistan and Afghanistan they
would have to scramble fighter jets and investigate.
So they cancelled our flight.
We
may be able to return in April for another try.
I
was able to get up the mountain with my film crew and
four yaks and we did what we went to do. We got some
beautiful footage of the mountain in all her
post-monsoon snowy glory.
Thank
you for your interest."
