Autumn Everest 2001: Hungarian Everest - Lhotse Expedition (2001)

We're going upwards at a constant slow pace and are constantly gasping for breath quickly. It'd be much better the other way round, but after all, this is the highest mountain in the world. David's breathing heavily behind me. As we slog towards ABC the weather's becoming worse and worse every moment, though I even managed to do a quick washing in the morning in the warm, caressing sunshine. It's all over now... We start walking quicker because of the heavy snowfall but the thin air and the 30-kilo backpacks turn out to be tough enemies. We're winding up and down on the moraine and by the time we get out of the labyrinth we've done another 800 meters to be recorded in the expedition's diary. If we added up all the meters that we've done so far between the base camp and the foot of the Face we'd have already reached the summit. But it'll come later. The mates up in ABC (Miki, Konyi, Zoli, Ákos) have put up a new tent for us next to theirs. David and Shamsher move in this tent whereas I'm returning to BC. I admit only back here that there is one single reason for my enthusiasm to run to and fro on the glacier: the heavenly stewed fruit that we're having as pudding this evening too. (Mező)
