South Side 4/11/01:
Got a short wake-up call from Greg Wilson this
morning, and the sat-phone audio was pretty
garbled, but it sounds like everyone is doing
well, happy, healthy, and they're planning to
spend their first night at Camp I (19,500 feet)
above the Icefall, on Thursday April 12. Phil

Follow
along as Phil, his wife, Greg Wilson and two
businessmen send in a dispatch now and then
updating the progress of their team and perhaps
a thought or two as they go along. They have
decided to approach the mountain the "old
way" and "just focus on climbing the
mountain". "I'm guessing your
readers will find it somewhat interesting in
that this will be my 7th trip to the mountain
and I'll be accompanied by Phil Ershler and his
wife. They will be trying to reach the summit,
obviously together, which will represent Susan's
(Phil's wife) Seventh Summit. It will also be
Phil's second time to climb all 7 if he is
successful. In addition to Phil and Susan we
will have two other climbers on our permit who
are US businessmen trying to realize their
own personal goal of standing on
top." Greg Wilson |

North Side 4/11/01:The
2001 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition
has begun, and a discovery has already been
made!
The
team believes they have found the 1922 British
expedition's Advance Base Camp. At least three
oxygen cylinders from that climb were discovered
below the current Advance Base Camp area. The
1922 expedition was the first to take
supplemental oxygen to the mountain; its use was
highly debated on grounds of the
"unsporting" nature of deploying
artificial aids to attempt to summit.
Web
coverage started yesterday, April 11th, and you
will now be able to follow the researcher's
progress at the site here.
The team will be sending back audio, visuals and
actual video footage to the site. Please
tune in and follow along with this historical
expedition.
