International Mountain Guides Everest 2002 Dispatch 14:  IMG on the Summit of Everest

Thurs May 16, 2002 approx. 10:20am

Well, this is an emotional moment for me right now. Phil Ershler, my long-time friend, business partner and colleague, is on the summit of Mt. Everest with his wife, Susan. They have climbed all the Seven Summits together as a couple now, what a great feat. I'm psyched for both of them. IMG client Ted Wheeler is there with them, and Danuru, Dorje Lama and Mingma T. Sherpas made the climb to the summit as well. Ted was with IMG on the North Side in 2001 shooting for the 8,000m elevation and returned to the South Side with us this year gunning for the top. Great job, Ted!

IMG client Stuart Smith is still climbing with Mingma Ongel Sherpa, apparently doing well but delayed by the traffic jam at the Hillary Step. His pace has been good though and it's still early in the morning, so he's looking good for the summit unless traffic at the Step becomes impossible.

I will write a little more in a few minutes, Phil and Sue are going to radio again before they leave the top, I'll send more details if I get them. Weather is holding up well, lookin' good, a very fine day to climb in the Himalaya.
