The IMG Everest Expeditions: South and North

Welcome IMG again to EverestNews.com. EverestNews.com will post dispatches from the South Side IMG Expedition and news from the North Side IMG Everest Expedition this Spring 2001.
Everest South Side Dispatch: IMG Everest 2001 – April 25, 2001

Phil Ershler

With a light snow falling at base camp, the IMG team is enjoying a rest day after 5 days in the Western Cwm.  After ascending the 2,000 foot ice fall to Camp I on the 20th, the team climbed to 21,300 feet the next day.

Camp II will serve as advanced base camp for the expedition under the capable management of Phurba Sherpa who will remain there for the duration of the climb.

With all the members healthy after a rest day in Camp II, the team climbed to the upper most part of the Cwm at the foot of the Lhotse face at 22,000 feet for a look at the route to camp III.

On the 24th, the team descended directly from camp II to base camp.  The next goal will be to climb to the base of the yellow band and occupy camp III at approximately 23,500 feet.  Team members will use oxygen to aid sleeping at this altitude.  Weather permitting, the team will depart base camp for the 4-day ascent to camp III on the 28th of April

Expedition Leader

Everest North Side Dispatch: IMG Everest 2001 – April 26, 2001

"Expedition leader Eric Simonson has reported a full day's work by his search team high on Everest's North side. Eric believes that climbers Dave Hahn and Tap Richards have successfully located the 1975 Chinese Camp 6, from where Wang Hongbao had allegedly found his "English dead", marking a "major waypoint" for further searches. They also located the 1960 Chinese Camp 6. Meanwhile, after epic wanderings in difficult conditions, climber Andy Politz successfully reached the North Ridge crest and finally located what we preliminarily believe to be Mallory & Irvine's 1924 Camp 6. Andy has excavated an old sock and mittens in an area no other team was ever believed to use as their high camp, and as Eric points out, "socks and mittens don't just grow up there!" Erin Simonson. Full reports from IMG North are here.
