Summit's Everest 2001 North Ridge Expedition
Dispatch
One:
Everest,
the mountain of many dreams and many failed
dreams. We decided to send a team to try and
climb the North ridge this spring. The team
consists of a real mix match of people, two
from the US, one 55 yr old from England, a few
'other' Brits and a guy called Neil Hornett.
Neil is 21 and is trying to climb the route
without oxygen to try and be the youngest guy
to do so. The team is here to support his
effort so we hope that he does OK.
Ian,
the leader, flew out to Kathmandu on the 18th
March to finalize the details for the
expedition. On arriving he was warmly welcomed
by some old friends who live there and spent
the first day and night having fun. His main role is not to guide the
expedition, because we don't believe that
8000ers can be guided, however he is there as
the coordinator.
We
have employed one local Sherpa who is a family
friend called Purna Sherpa. He is a very
strong Sherpa and I am sure that he will be a
great asset to the team. Ian has been able to
secure all the necessary permits for our satellite
phones and our radios and he is doing such a
good job with the management of the expedition
there is not a lot for me to worry
about back home in the UK.
The
expedition freight turned into a bit of a
nightmare when we were quoted a cost for each
kg and then once everything was packed we were
informed that the cost was per cubic kg??
Doubled the price, however it was worth it
when I sent the kit from Kent, UK on the 21st
and it was in Kathmandu on the 22nd!
Anyway
the main team flies on the 25th March and so
I'll let you all know what's happening then,
