Broad Peak Base
(4900m) / K2 base-camp (5100m)
Dear Friends, It is a
great pleasure to send this message from K2 base camp, after walking 95 km in 8
days. We arrived here early today, at 9:00 amidst a very beautiful morning. A
deep blue sky, where there wasn't a cloud to be seen, and K2 welcomed us,
revealing all it greatness. As we got closer to our Base Camp we started
meeting the members of the other expeditions. The first of them an international one, commanded by the American Gary
Pfisterer. The second one was commanded by the Italian Hans Kammerlander. The
third and the fourth are Koreans.
As I have already
said, the season promises to be one of the very best. Dry conditions make for
good climbing and this summer has given us just that. Both on the Abruzzos and
the Tomo Cesen routes all the expeditions have made good progress to date.
We are attempting the Abruzzos route and are excited to find that the Korean
team (that I met last year on Hidden Peak) has already established camp II at
6700 meters. Gary's Expedition has already set their camp 1 at 6050 meters. It is
great that the effort is so far advanced. Soon, with our help, camp III
will be set at 7450 meters. Working together we will summit K2 this year!
Thank you for your encouragement and support.
