Towards Karakorum, 7th
day of the expedition K2 2000!
Islamabad/Chilas, Jun
6th 2000.
Fortunately all ready!
We left Islamabad at 4:30, North towards Pakistan, and soon
traveled along the famous Karakorum High Way. The road that crosses the majority
of the mountains in the country. Traveling at altitudes over 4000 meters,
and arriving in China. But we haven't arrived today, we've gone
just to the city of Chilas, where we're going to spend the night.
This trip is a great
opportunity to get to know better this big country that is Pakistan. In fact, as its
official name suggests: The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Its territory is
ten times smaller than Brazil (800 thousand square kilometers), but almost
the same population (140 million inhabitants). The population is extremely
religious and practically all Muslim (95%), but very poor, (annual income per
capita only $ 460). In spite of everything, it is a beautiful country,
with five of the biggest mountains in the world, and still better, with 40 of 50
biggest mountains in the world. Really a paradise for any alpinist.
That's why, our trip
is being one of the most interesting, following the Indo River (one of the
biggest of Asia with 2,860 km), leading us to really fascinating experiences.
Tomorrow I will tell
you more about this big country.

Arrival in Skardu, 8th
day of the Expedition to K2: Chilas/Skardu
We have arrived in
Skardu at last. It means a step from the mountains. I am glad to be pass all of
Islamabad and the dangerous Karakorum Highway, which we faced to get here. That
road is hung along the Indo River bank, challenging and threatening
abysms. The lack of signaling, constantly bad road does not allow high
speed. Thus, it took us 8 hours to travel 240 km, that's why we are exhausted.
Well, since I left
Brazil, I've got some news concerning our expedition. The most important is that
our team has suffered deep changes. Definitely our team are just three
alpinists: Abele Blanc, Marco Camandona and I. Hans Kammerlander, who would take
the same permission (via Abruzzos Ram), has decided to go through other climbing
way (Tomo Cesen). So, he had to buy his own permission by the Pakistani
Government (It costs 12 thousand dollars). The other one who has given up is the
German Peter Guggemos. He was trying to climb Makalu last month, has had a great
physical effort and he decide not to come to K2. These changes don't
mean a lot to me, because although they were in our team, they would climb in a
totally independent way, just taking advantage of the same permission,
that is for 7 alpinists.
And, as I am very
tired, due to our long journey since Islamabad (700 Km demanded more than 24
hours by road), I will wait the other news for tomorrow.

Hans might change his
mind. He is presently climbing an unnamed "tower around 6250 meter called
the Nameless Tower in Pakistan. We will know more once he arrives at K2 ...
Guggemos the famous
German is now expected to attempt G2 later this year.
